Front Suspension

Front Suspension

WARNING: NO ATTEMPT MUST BE MADE TO WELD OR REPAIR THE ALUMINUM CROSS MEMBER. IF IT IS DAMAGED A NEW ONE MUST BE INSTALLED.

The independent front suspension is of the double wishbone type and is mounted on two cross members, the front cross member consisting of a pressed steel fabrication and the rear cross member consisting of an aluminum casting.

The rear cross member provides the mounting points for the power assisted steering gear, the lower arm rear bushings and the engine mounts. The front cross member provides the mounting points for lower arm front bushings and the stabilizer bar.

A vertical swan neck knuckle arm is installed between the lower and upper suspension arms. This wheel knuckle carries the lower arm swivel joint, front hub, ABS rotor, ABS sensor, wheel bearing and brake assembly.

A coaxial strut and spring assembly is installed between the lower arm and vehicle body.

As the road wheel rises, the movement is transmitted to the vertical link, then through the ball joints to the upper and lower arms and the coaxial strut and spring assembly. The spring absorbs the shock and the damper damps any unwanted spring frequencies, which could lead to an unstable vehicle.

A stabilizer bar is mounted via clamps and bushes to the front cross member and is linked via connecting rods to each of the lower arms.

When cornering, weight is naturally transferred to the outer wheel and there is a natural tendency for the inner wheel to lift. The stabilizer bar helps to minimize this by transferring some of the apparent rise of outer wheel to the inner wheel through the links to the lower arms. This helps to provide a smoother ride.

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)

WARNING: THE FACT THAT THE VEHICLE IS FITTED WITH DYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL MUST NEVER ALLOW THE DRIVER TO BE TEMPTED INTO TAKING RISKS WHICH COULD AFFECT HIS/HER SAFETY OR THAT OF OTHER ROAD USERS. IN ALL CASES IT REMAINS THE DRIVER'S RESPONSIBILITY TO DRIVE SAFELY ACCORDING TO THE PREVAILING CONDITIONS.

Dynamic stability control may also be specified as an option.

DSC is operational whenever the engine is running, unless it has been switched off. The DSC system controls the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), traction control and yaw control of the vehicle. Yaw control determines the vehicle's direction relative to the driver's inputs (sideslip and under/oversteer). It applies braking pressure to individual wheels if excessive variation is detected. This ensures that the vehicle follows the drivers intended direction of travel. The dynamic stability control system, when fitted, can be switched OFF by pressing the switch on the gear selector surround. The warning light in the instrument cluster will remain on to show that the system has been switched OFF. If the switch is pressed again the system will switch ON. A system malfunction is indicated by a message. It is safe to drive the vehicle but the system may not activate under wheel spin or slide conditions. Report the fault to a Jaguar Dealer as soon as possible. Message: DSC SYSTEM FAULT Warning light: Amber and the instrument cluster warning light will be lit.
