Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


Removal
All Vehicles
1. Place the selector lever in the 'N' position.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable
3. Remove the driveshaft.

3.0 L Vehicles

4. Remove the starter motor. For additional information, refer to Starting and Charging.





4.0 L Vehicles
5. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) electrical connector.





All Vehicles
6. Remove the heat shields.





7. Detach the oxygen sensor connector block.





8. Remove the rubber access cover (3.0L shown, 4.0 L similar).





9. Remove the four torque converter nuts.
^ Rotate the torque converter to gain access to the remaining nuts.





10. Detach the oil cooler tubes from the oil pan.





11. Detach the oil cooler tubes from the automatic transmission.
^ Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.





12. Disconnect the gear selector cable.





13. Detach the gear selector cable.
^ Remove the retaining bolts.





14. WARNING: SECURE THE TRANSMISSION TO THE TRANSMISSION JACK WITH A SAFETY CHAIN. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS INSTRUCTION CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.

Lower the rear of the transmission.
^ Remove the transmission mount retaining bolts.





15. Disconnect the output shaft speed sensor (OSS) electrical connector.





16. Disconnect the transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector.
^ Detach the protective cover.





17. Disconnect the transmission body electrical connector.
^ Loosen the retaining nut.





18. Disconnect the intermediate shaft speed (ISS) sensor and turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connectors.





19. Detach the wiring harness.





20. Detach the wiring harness from the transmission housing.





3.0 L Vehicles
21. Remove the upper transmission housing retaining bolts.





22. Remove the lower transmission housing retaining bolts.





4.0 L Vehicles
23. Remove the upper transmission housing retaining bolts.





24. Remove the lower transmission housing retaining bolts.

All Vehicles
25.CAUTION: Do not let the torque converter drop out of the transmission. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

Lower the transmission from the vehicle.

Installation
All vehicles

1. NOTE: If the automatic transmission fluid is very dirty or it contains metallic particles, then install a new automatic transmission oil cooler and tubes.

Flush the transmission oil cooler and fluid tubes.





2. CAUTION: The torque converter is heavy.

CAUTION: The torque converter must remain at the correct installation depth throughout the whole installation procedure.

NOTE: The torque converter hub must engage fully in the oil pump drive gear.

Check the installation depth between the transmission flange and the torque converter centering spigot for the correct clearance.
3. Apply a thin layer of High-temperature grease meeting Jaguar specification ESD-M1 C220-A or equivalent to the centering spigot bore on the torque converter.

4. WARNING: SECURE THE TRANSMISSION TO THE TRANSMISSION JACK WITH A SAFETY CHAIN. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS INSTRUCTION CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.

Using the Hi-Lift Transmission Jack, raise and position the transmission into place.





4.0 L Vehicles
5. Install the lower transmission housing retaining bolts.





6. Install the upper transmission housing retaining bolts.





3.0 L Vehicles
7. Install the lower transmission housing retaining bolts.





8. Install the upper transmission housing retaining bolts.





All Vehicles

9. NOTE: Rotate the torque converter to gain access for the remaining nuts.

Install the four torque converter nuts.
^ Tighten to 38 Nm.





10. Attach the wiring harness to the transmission housing.





11. Attach the wiring harness.





12. Connect the intermediate shaft speed (ISS) sensor and turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connectors.





13. Connect the transmission body electrical connector.
^ Tighten the retaining nut.





14. Connect the transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector.
^ Attach the protective cover.





15. Connect the output shaft speed sensor (OSS) electrical connector.





16. Raise the rear of the transmission.
^ Install the transmission mount retaining bolts.





17. Attach the gear selector cable.
^ Install the retaining bolts.





18. Connect the gear selector cable.





19. Attach the oil cooler tubes to the automatic transmission.





20. Attach the oil cooler tubes to the oil pan.





21. Install the rubber access cover (3.0L shown, 4.0 L similar).





22. Attach the oxygen sensor connector block.





23. Install the heat shields.





4.0 L Vehicles
24. Connect the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) electrical connector.

3.0 L Vehicles
25. Install the starter motor. For additional information, refer to Starting and Charging.
All Vehicles
26. Install the driveshaft.
27. Connect the battery ground cable.
28. Correct the transmission fluid level. For additional information, refer to Automatic Transmission Fluid.
