Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
Removal
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Disconnect both pre-catalytic converter oxygen sensors (left-hand shown, right-hand similar).
4. Disconnect both post-catalytic converter oxygen sensors (left-hand shown, right-hand similar).
5. Remove the support bracket.
6. Detach both rear muffler exhaust hanger insulators (right-hand shown, left-hand similar).
7. NOTE: Support the exhaust system.
Detach both three way catalytic converters (right-hand shown, left-hand similar).
8. Remove the exhaust system.
1. Detach the center exhaust hanger insulators.
2. Remove the exhaust system.
9. Remove the center heat shield.
10. Shorten the length of the driveshaft.
^ Loosen the driveshaft locknut.
11. CAUTION: Under no circumstances must the flexible coupling (or its fixings) be loosened or removed from the driveshaft
Detach the driveshaft from the transmission flange.
^ Mark the position of the driveshaft in relation to the transmission flange.
^ Mark the position of each nut and bolt in relation to the transmission flexible joint.
12. CAUTION: Under no circumstances must the flexible coupling (or its fixings) be loosened or removed from the driveshaft
Detach the driveshaft from the differential flange.
^ Mark the position of the driveshaft in relation to the differential flange.
^ Mark the position of the balance nut in relation to the differential flange (if fitted).
^ Mark the position of each nut and bolt in relation to the driveshaft flexible joint.
13. CAUTION: Support the driveshaft front and rear sections.
NOTE: Note the position of the driveshaft center bearing shims.
Remove the driveshaft.
14. Detach the support insulator.
15. WARNING: POSITION THE TRANSMISSION JACK AND INSTALL HOLDING STRAP AROUND TRANSMISSION.
Remove the transmission support.
16. Detach the stabilizer rod.
^ Remove the stabilizer rod locating pin.
^ Partially lower the transmission.
17. Detach the selector rod.
^ Remove the selector rod locating pin.
18. Detach the slave cylinder supply tube retaining clip.
19. Detach the slave cylinder supply tube.
^ Clamp the hose to prevent loss of fluid.
^ Detach the slave cylinder supply tube.
20. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor electrical connector.
21. Disconnect the reverse light switch electrical connector.
22. Detach the electrical wiring harness from the transmission.
23. Detach the electrical wiring harness from the transmission.
24. Detach the electrical wiring harness from the transmission.
25. Remove the electrical connector protective cover.
26. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors.
27. Disconnect the starter motor ground cable.
28. Remove the starter motor.
29. Remove the bellhousing bolts.
30. Remove the bellhousing bolts (continued).
31. Remove the transmission.
1. Remove the remaining bellhousing bolts.
Installation
1. Install the bellhousing bolts.
1. Position the transmission to the engine using the transmission jack.
2. Install the bellhousing bolts (continued).
3. Install the remaining bellhousing bolts.
4. Install the starter motor.
5. Connect the starter motor electrical connectors.
6. Connect the starter motor ground cable.
7. Install the electrical connector protective cover.
8. Attach the electrical wiring harness to the transmission.
9. Attach the electrical wiring harness to the transmission.
10. Attach the electrical wiring harness to the transmission.
11. Connect the reverse light switch electrical connector.
12. Connect the vehicle speed sensor electrical connector.
13. NOTE: Install a new O-ring seal.
Connect the slave cylinder supply tube.
1. Unclamp the hose.
14. Attach the slave cylinder supply tube retaining clip.
15. Attach the selector rod.
^ Install the selector rod locating pin.
16. Install the stabilizer rod.
^ Install the stabilizer rod locating pin.
17. Loosely install the transmission support insulator.
18. Install the transmission support
^ Fully raise the transmission jack.
^ Install the transmission support retaining bolts.
^ Remove the transmission jack.
19. Fully tighten the transmission support insulator retaining bolt.
^ Tighten to 40 Nm.
20. CAUTION: Support the driveshaft front and rear sections.
NOTE: Correctly install the driveshaft center bearing shims.
Loosely install the driveshaft.
21. Attach the driveshaft to the differential flange.
1. Install the balance nut in the correct position.
^ Install each driveshaft nut and bolt in the correct position.
22. Attach the driveshaft to the transmission flange.
^ Install each driveshaft nut and bolt in the correct position.
^ Tighten to 85 Nm.
23. Fully tighten the driveshaft retaining bolts.
^ Tighten to 42 Nm.
24. Fully tighten the driveshaft locknut.
^ Tighten to 90 Nm.
25. Install the center heat shield.
26. Install the exhaust system.
^ Attach the center exhaust hanger insulators.
^ Install the exhaust system.
27. NOTE: Support the exhaust system.
Attach both three way catalytic converters (right-hand shown, left-hand similar).
^ Tighten to 40 Nm.
28. Attach both rear muffler exhaust hanger insulators (right-hand shown, left-hand similar).
29. Install the support bracket.
30. Connect both post-catalytic converter oxygen sensors (left-hand shown, right-hand similar).
31. Connect both pre-catalytic converter oxygen sensors (left-hand shown, right-hand similar).
32. Reconnect the battery ground cable.
33. Bleed the clutch slave cylinder hydraulic system. For addition information, refer to Clutch, M/T.
