Popping Noise When Brake Pedal Applied - Install Capacitor - Repair Procedure
Issue:
Owners of some X-TYPE vehicles may express a concern over a "popping" noise being heard through the audio system when the brake pedal is applied. To solve this concern, a capacitor can be installed into the brake pedal switch.
Action:
In case of a customer complaint of the above condition, install a capacitor into the brake switch circuit, by following the workshop procedure outlined below.
WORKSHOP PROCEDURE
1. Open driver's door.
2. Power the driver's seat to the furthest position back.
3. Open hood, fit fender protector covers.
4. Disconnect battery (see Workshop Manual, JTIS CD ROM, section: 414-01).
5. Disconnect brake pedal switch electrical connector.
6. Cut brake pedal switch harness from electrical connector.
Note:
Cut the brake pedal switch harness as close to the brake pedal switch electrical connector as possible.
7. Strip back the plastic casing from the harness cables approximately 6-7 mm, using special tool (418-117) from the harness repair kit (418-S065).
8. Align butt-splice connector (red 418-107) from the harness repair kit with one of the stripped harness cables.
9. Crimp butt-splice connector to the cable using special tool (418-116) from the harness repair kit (418-S065).
10. Align butt-splice connector (red 418-107) from the harness repair kit (418-S065) with the second stripped harness cable.
11. Crimp butt-splice connector to the second cable using special tool (418-116) from the harness repair kit (418-S065).
12. Slide heat shrink tubes (418-104) from the harness repair kit over the butt-slice connectors onto the harness cables.
13. Align the new connector/capacitor (Illustration 1) with the butt-splice connectors.
14. Insert green (G) pre-stripped cable from the connector/capacitor assembly into the butt-splice connector crimped to the green/white (G/W) cable.
15. Crimp G cable from the connector/capacitor assembly to the butt-splice connector using special tool (418-116) from the harness repair kit.
16. Insert brown (N) pre-stripped cable from the connector/capacitor assembly into the butt-splice connector crimped to the brown/red (N/R) cable.
17. Crimp N cable from the connector/capacitor assembly to the butt-splice connector using special tool (418-116) from the harness repair kit.
18. Slide one of the heat shrink tubes placed over the cables to cover one of the butt-splice connectors.
19. Use a suitable heat source to shrink the tube around the butt-splice connector.
20. Slide the second heat shrink tube placed over the cable to cover the second butt-splice connector.
21. Use a suitable heat source to shrink the tube around the butt-splice connector.
22. Connect the connector/capacitor assembly electrical connector to the brake pedal switch.
Note:
Ensure the brake pedal harness is routed away from the steering column.
23. Connect battery (see Workshop Manual, JTIS CD ROM, section: 414-01).
24. Remove fender protector covers, close hood.
25. Power the driver's seat to the original position.
26. Close driver's door.
