Front Axle Shafts - Check Retention In CV Joint - Service Action S930

This Service Action applies to unsold X-TYPE vehicles only.

Issue:

During the manufacturing process it is possible that the front axle shafts may have been disturbed. As a result the splined end may not be fully engaged in the outer Constant Velocity (CV) joint resulting in a loud knocking noise.

Action:

Inspect all unsold X-TYPE vehicles within the above VIN range to determine if the front axle shafts are fully engaged.

If one or both axle shafts are not engaged in the outer Constant Velocity (CV) joint, attempt to re-install the shaft by pushing it back in.

If the axle shaft does not lock back into place, install a new axle shaft.

WORKSHOP PROCEDURE

1. Raise vehicle on four-post ramp with the vehicle weight on the wheels.

2. From under the vehicle grip the first front axle shaft. Push the front axle shaft towards the outer Constant Velocity (CV) joint then pull back the axle shaft towards the transmission (Illustration 1).

Note:
Normal hand force of at least 10kg (22 lbf) is needed to move a non-engaged circlip. (E.g. normal hand force with no special tools.)

3. If movement of more than 1 mm is detected on the outward push, a click indicating engagement of the cir-clip should be felt.

4. If movement is felt on the inward pull and the axle shaft did not come adrift, push it out again to engage.

5. Pull the axle shaft towards the transmission to verify that the axle shaft has engaged. There should now be now movement of the axle shaft.

6. If the axle shaft comes adrift from the outer CV joint when pulled towards the transmission at any time, replace the complete axle shaft.

7. Repeat for remaining front axle shaft.

Warranty Information:

Warranty claims should be submitted quoting S930 in place of the normal warranty fault code together with SRO: 47.91.06. This will result in a labor time allowance of 0.2 hours for the front axle shafts inspection. Should the vehicle be brought back into the workshop for this action alone to be undertaken, an additional labor time allowance of 0.1 hours may be claimed quoting SRO: 10.10.10 for drive in/drive out. Drive in/drive out may only be claimed when the vehicle has been brought in for this action alone to be undertaken.

The Service Action covers the inspection of the retention of the front axle shafts to the outer CV joint and installation only. If a new axle shaft is required, perform the repair under normal warranty procedures using the warranty information shown.

NOTE:
Always perform a DCS claim search first to determine whether this service action has been performed on this vehicle. The warranty selection under the vehicle inquiry will give a listing of all claims against the vehicle. If this service action number appears in the program code field, do not perform this service action.
