Special Service tools

Removal





1. Loosen the hub nut.
2. Drain the transaxle.
3. Remove the engine.





4. Remove the coolant system top hose.





5. Attach the transaxle lifting bracket.





6. Attach LH engine lifting bracket.





7. Attach RH engine lifting bracket.





8. Remove the wheel hub nut.

NOTE: Left hand shown, right hand similar.





9. Remove the tie rod end retaining nut.

NOTE: Left hand shown, right hand similar.





10. Using the special tool, detach the tie rod end.

NOTE: Right hand shown, Left hand similar.





11. Detach the wheel knuckle.
1. Remove the lower arm ball joint retaining bolt.
2. Reposition the lower arm.
3. Detach the wheel knuckle.

NOTE: Left hand shown, right hand similar.





12. Attach the engine lifting kit.





13. Remove the engine roll restrictor mounting bracket retaining bolt.





14. Remove the engine and transaxle from subframe.





15. Using the special tools, remove the LH halfshaft.





16. Remove the halfshaft seal.





17. Remove the transfer case Y bracket retaining bolt.





18. Using the special tools, remove the RH halfshaft.
1. Attach special tools to the halfshaft.
2. Lever the special tools to displace the halfshaft.
3. Install the transfer case Y bracket retaining bolt.
4. Remove the halfshaft.

CAUTION: To prevent damage to the transfer box internal seal, make sure that the link shaft is not retracted further than 200 mm from the transfer box casing.





19. Disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.





20. Disconnect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.





21. Remove the exhaust heat shield.





22. Remove the catalytic converter retaining bolts.





23. Remove the catalytic converter.

NOTE: Remove and discard retaining nuts and studs.





24. Remove the transfer case mounting bracket.





25. Remove transfer case Y bracket retaining bolts.





26. Remove transfer case Y bracket.





27. Using special tool detach the transfer case link shaft.





28. Using the special tool, partially remove the transfer case link shaft.

CAUTION: To prevent damage to the transfer box internal seal, make sure that the link shaft is not retracted further than 200 mm from the transfer box casing.





29. Remove the transfer case.





30. Remove the O-ring seal.





31. Remove and discard the link shaft snap ring.





32. Remove the link shaft limiting tool.
1. Remove the transfer case.
2. Remove the link shaft limiting tool.





33. Remove the link shaft.





34. Using the special tool, remove the link shaft oil seal.





35. Remove the starter motor.





36. Remove the transaxle retaining bolts.





37. Remove the transaxle retaining bolts.





38. Remove the transaxle.
