Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview



Starting System
1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.

Visual Inspection Chart

Mechanical Electrical

- Starter Motor. - Fuse 27 (30A) Front power distribution box
- Battery. - Fuse 1 (5A) Primary junction box
- Starter relay.
- Fuse 15 (5A) Primary junction box
- Transmission control module (TCM)
- Powertrain control module (PCM)
- Wiring harness(es).
- Damaged, loose or corroded connectors

3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
4. If the concern is not visually evident, verify the symptom and refer to the Symptom Chart.

Condition(s):

The engine does not crank

Possible Source(s):

- Battery
- Starter motor
- Starter relay
- Ignition switch
- Transmission control module (TCM)
- Powertrain control module (PCM)

Action(s) to take:
- GO to Pinpoint Test A A : the Engine Does Not Crank

Engine cranks slowly

Possible Source(s):

- Battery
- Circuitry
- Starter motor

Action(s) to take:
- GO to Pinpoint Test B B : the Engine Cranks Slowly

Unusual starter motor noise

Possible Source(s):

- Starter motor
- Flywheel ring gear

Action(s) to take:
- CHECK flywheel or flexiplate.
INSPECT starter motor for alignment, cracked case. Make sure the mounting bolts are tightened. If necessary, INSTALL a new starter motor.

The starter spins but the engine does not crank

Possible Source(s):

- Starter motor

Action(s) to take:
- INSPECT the flywheel or flexiplate for missing teeth. CHECK starter motor for correct mounting. If concern persists, INSTALL a new starter motor.
