Inability to Shift Gears - Selector Lever Moves Freely Through J-Gate - Repair Procedure
Issue:
Some S-TYPE vehicles, within the above VIN range, may experience a condition where the selector lever can move, but the transmission will not shift out of gear. Depending on the gear selected at the time of failure, the engine may not start.
Cause:
Selector lever cable bracket retaining bolts loose/adrift.
Action:
Should a customer express concern, follow the Service Instruction outlined below.
1. Raise vehicle on lift.
2. Remove the selector cable bracket retaining bolts (Illustration 1).
3. Clean retaining bolts threads and apply Loctite 243.
4. Install and tighten the selector cable bracket retaining bolts to 8 Nm (Illustration 2).
Note:
Ensure the selector lever position corresponds to the illuminated gear indication light on the J-Gate. Any faults other than the selector cable bracket retaining bolts - Service fix, are to be carried out as a separate Warranty Claim.
5. Lower vehicle.
