Transfer Case Shaft Oil Leak

CONDITION SUMMARY:
OIL LEAK FROM TRANSFER CASE AREA
Situation:
Thread-lock seal between the staked nut and transfer case shaft may breakdown, resulting in an oil leak from the transfer case area.
Action:
Should a customer express a concern of an oil leak from the transfer case area, refer to the Repair Procedure detailed in this bulletin to install a new gasket, thread lock and nut to the transfer case shaft.

DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
INSTALL TRANSFER CASE SHAFT NUT AND GASKET
NOTE:
GTR lookup sequence is as follows:
GTR Home > NAS > Service Information/X400 - X-TYPE/2002 > Workshop Manuals > Bookmark "Powertrain/Exhaust System/309-00: Exhaust System/Removal and Installation" Link "Muffler Inlet Pipe (30.10.06)"
1. Refer to GTR section 30.10.06 and remove exhaust muffler inlet pipe.
2. Loosen and remove three bolts securing the transfer case support bracket. (Figure 1)
3. Remove support bracket.
4. Loosen and remove the staked nut from the transfer case shaft. (Figure 2)
5. Remove shaft gasket.
CAUTION:
To avoid contamination of the transfer case, use a cloth soaked with Loctite 7070 Thread Cleaner to clean shaft sealing face and threads.
Do not spray solvent directly onto the sealing face or shaft threads.
6. Soak a cloth with Loctite 7070 Thread Cleaner and clean transfer case shaft and sealing face. Let dry.
CAUTION:
Do not apply Loctite 648 Thread Lock directly to the transfer case shaft threads.
7. Apply two drops of Loctite 648 to the threads of the new transfer case nut only before installation.
CAUTION:
Ensure the transfer case is cold before assembly.
8. Install the new gasket over the shaft.
9. Holding the new gasket in correct position, install new nut and toque to 20 Nm (14.7 lb-ft).
10. Locate the stake position on the shaft and stake the nut to shaft.
11. Install the transfer case support bracket and bolts. (Figure 1)
12. Tighten the top two bolts to 25 Nm (18.5 lb-ft) and the bottom bolt to 47 Nm (34.5 lb-ft).
13. Refer to GTR section (30.10.06) and install exhaust muffler inlet pipe.
