Premature Front Seat Backrest Wear On

Wire - Modification Procedure
Remove and destroy Bulletin XT501-21, dated 10/04.
Replace with this Bulletin.

Issue:
Some 2002-05 MY X-TYPE vehicles with CLASSIC STYLE FRONT SEATS ONLY, within the above VIN range, may exhibit premature wear to the outer bolster. The wire that supports the seat backrest outer bolster puts pressure on the seat cover when the customer enters and exits the vehicle.
The outer bolster support wire must be removed from the seat backrest frame before installing a new seat backrest cover to address this concern.
Action:
In case of a customer complaint premature wear, that requires the installation of new seat backrest cover to resolve the complaint, remove the outer bolster support wire before installing the new seat backrest cover to seat backrest frame. Follow the modification procedure below.
MODIFICATION PROCEDURE
Note:
Perform this modification before installing the new seatback cover.
1. Remove the seat backrest pad.
2. Disconnect the side airbag electrical connector.
3. Displace the retaining clip for the side airbag harness from the seat backrest.
4. Disconnect the recline motor electrical connector.
5. Displace the retaining clip for the recline motor harness from the seat backrest.
6. Remove the seat backrest securing screws and the seat backrest.
7. Place a suitable protective material over the upper part of the seat frame and the recline motor on the outboard side (Illustration 1).
8. Cut through the outboard wire in two places as close to the frame as possible and place cut wire aside (Illustration 2).
9. De-burr the cut wire ends on the frame making sure to remove all sharp edges and extra material. Clean away any debris from the frame (Illustration 3).
10. Remove the protective material from the frame.
11. Apply a suitable adhesive tape over the cut wire area of the frame (Illustration 4).
12. Position the seat backrest on the seat base.
13. Install and tighten the seat backrest securing screws.
14. Seat the recline motor harness retaining clip on the seat backrest.
15. Connect the recline motor electrical connector.
16. Seat the side air bag harness retaining clip on the seat backrest.
17. Connect the side air bag electrical connector.
18. Install the seat backrest pad.
