Power Assist Steering Leak / Heavy / Noisy - Diagnostic Aid
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
X-TYPE VIN: C00344 - Onwards
Model Year: 2002 - Onwards
CONDITION SUMMARY:
Situation:
This Technical Bulletin is to consolidate Special Service Messages (SSM) 30660, 30797, 33183, and 36424 concerning power assist steering (PAS) leaks and heavy or noisy operation.
Action:
In the event of a customer concern of any of the above conditions, follow the Diagnostic Procedure outlined in this Bulletin below. All repairs are to be carried out following normal warranty (if applicable) policy and procedures.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE:
IDENTIFYING POWER STEERING LEAKS (INCLUDING NOISE DUE TO LEAKS)
NOTE:
Prior to deciding to change any part it should be clearly identified where the leak point is:
1. Clean off the oil residue and run the power steering system to confirm the leak.
NOTE:
It should never be necessary to change both the power steering pump and the high pressure feed hose.
2. PAS pump outlet leak(s). (Figure 1)
^ Leak at the pipe 0-ring in the quick connector (1)
^ Replace pipe and connector (part number XR83295)
^ Tighten to 57 +/- 3 Nm (42 +/- 2 lb-ft.).
^ Leak at the quick connector to pump adaptor (2):
^ Disconnect joint.
^ Replace washer (part number XR85010).
^ Tighten joint to 57 +/- 3 Nm (42 +/- 2 lb-ft).
^ Leak at pump adaptor to pump body (3):
^ Replace pump.
^ Remove quick connector from new pump.
^ Install original pipe into new pump.
^ Tighten to 57 +/- 3 Nm (42 +/- 2 lb-ft).
3. Pin-hole in the main body leak. (Figure 2)
CAUTION:
Care must be taken when determining if leak is coming from PAS pump or from the engine water pump. It is not necessary to replace a PAS pump if the engine water pump is found to be leaking.
4. PAS pump leak from front seal behind the pulley. ((1) Figure 3)
5. PAS pump leak from gasket in the middle of the pump. ((2) Figure 3)
6. PAS pump leak from rear seal at water pump drive. ((3) Figure 3)
POWER STEERING HEAVY (INCLUDING NOISY AND HEAVY WITH NO LEAK EVIDENT)
1. Flush the power steering fluid as per SSM 36424.
2. Replace PAS reservoir after flushing procedure to remove all traces of contaminants from the system.
3. If condition still exists, verify PAS pump output pressure. If the correct pressure is being generated, contact Dealer Technical Support for further guidance.
POWER STEERING NOISY (GRINDING NOISE AT THE END OF LOCK/CORNERING - DUE TO FRONT HUB BEARING ISSUE)
1. Possible excessive front hub bearing movement, causing contact between the brake disc and caliper.
