Smart Key Component Replacement

CONDITION SUMMARY:
COMPONENTS PERMIT CORRECTION OF KEY ISSUES
Situation:
Instead of replacing the entire key assembly for a damaged or inoperative Smart key, components have been made available allowing individual replacement.
Action:
Dealers can now affect repairs to the Smart Key, should a customer express concern of certain conditions:
^ Repair of broken Smart Key blade latch
^ Replacement of silicon pad
^ Replacement of chrome rings.
Follow the Repair procedures outlined in this bulletin.

NOTE:
Repair procedures are under constant review, and therefore times are subject to change; those quoted here must be taken as guidance only. Always refer to DDW to obtain the latest repair time.
NOTE:
The SRO time of 0.2 hours is for replacing one, or ALL parts of the Smart key.
DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.
Normal warranty policy and procedures apply.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
SMART KEY BLADE LATCH REPLACEMENT
1. Remove the key blade by pressing the clip. (Figure 1 and Figure 2)
2. Insert a small, flat-blade screwdriver between the cover and the body, and lightly twist the screwdriver to remove the two side chrome rings one at a time. (Figure 2)
CAUTION:
The green printed circuit board, battery or the battery contacts (arrowed in Figure 3) may NOT be touched during the work procedure. Oil or contamination on either can affect the key fob performance.
NOTE:
If required, battery replacement procedures are found on GTR under: View Owner's Information > The New XK > Owner's Handbooks > 2007 > LINK "Keys and Remote Controls" - Changing the Remote Control Battery.
3. Pull apart key fob.
4. Remove clip. (Figure 4)
5. Install a new clip and spring, ensuring clipping feature is positioned in the front of end stop.
6. Re-assemble the two parts of the key assembly and press together.
7. Install the chrome finishers by pressing into place.
8. Insert the key blade.
SMART KEY TRANSMITTER SILICON PAD REPLACEMENT
1. Remove the key blade by pressing the clip. (Figure 1)
2. Insert a small, flat-blade screwdriver between the cover and the body, and lightly twist the screwdriver to remove the two side chrome rings one at a time. (Figure 2)
CAUTION:
The green printed circuit board, battery or the battery contacts (arrowed in E91988) may NOT be touched during the work procedure. Oil or contamination on either can affect the key fob performance.
NOTE:
If required, battery replacement procedures are found on GTR under: View Owner's Information > The New XK > Owner's Handbooks > 2007 > LINK "Keys and Remote Controls" - Changing the Remote Control Battery.
3. Pull apart the key fob.
4. Remove the printed circuit board as follows:
^ Apply a small amount of pressure to the key mat
^ When the printed circuit board lifts from the plastic key housing slightly as the result of the pressure, take hold of the board by the black plastic part of the board.
^ Pull the board out using the black plastic attached to the printed circuit board.
5. Note the position and orientation of the silicone pad. (Figure 6) silicone pad.
6. Push the silicone pad from the inside of the key housing to remove it. (Figure 7)
7. Install a new silicon pad as follows:
8. Insert the new silicone pad from inside the plastic key with the hazard button end first. (Figure 8)
9. Position the hazard triangle end and swing the pad down into position. (Figure 8)
10. Apply pressure to edge of the seal by Lock/Unlock buttons to push silicone pad into location.
11. Verify that the seal is located in correct position.

12. Reassemble key taking care not to touch the printed circuit board, battery or battery contacts.
13. Place printed circuit board back into housing.
14. Re-assemble the two parts together and press in place.
15. Install the chrome finishers by pressing into place.
16. Install key blade.
SMART KEY CHROME RINGS REPLACEMENT
1. Remove the key blade by pressing the clip. (Figure 9 and Figure 10)
2. Insert a small, flat-blade screwdriver between the cover and the body, and lightly twist the screwdriver to remove the two side chrome rings one at a time. (Figure 10)
3. Install the new pair of chrome rings (C2P 15136) by pressing into place.
4. Install key blade.
