COMPONENT LOCATION
OVERVIEW
Armored vehicles are fitted with a split charging system that allows all of the covert systems to be operated without compromising the condition of the main battery.
The split charging system is installed in the luggage compartment and consists of:
- A voltage sensitive relay.
- A 12 V, 80 Ah auxiliary battery.
- A satellite junction box.
The voltage sensitive relay controls the charging of the auxiliary battery, which supplies power to the satellite junction box for operation of the covert options installed on the vehicle (with the exception of the fire suppressant system).
The voltage sensitive relay is installed in the rear right corner of the spare wheel well, under the floor cover. The auxiliary battery and the satellite junction box are installed on a bracket at the front of the luggage compartment, behind the front cover.
SYSTEM OPERATION
The voltage sensitive relay monitors the charging voltage from the generator. When the engine is running and the voltage rises above 13.7 V, the relay contacts close and connect the main and auxiliary batteries in parallel. This allows the generator to charge both batteries simultaneously.
When the charging voltage drops below 12.8 V, for example when the engine stops or there is a charging fault, the voltage sensitive relay contacts open and isolate the auxiliary battery from the main battery.
