Parking Brake System: Description and Operation: Overview

Parking Brake

OVERVIEW
The parking brake is an electrically actuated system that operates on the rear brake calipers. Cables are connected to the rear brake calipers, and act directly on the same pistons used for normal, hydraulic rear brake actuation.
The parking brake is controlled by the EPB (electronic parking brake) module. In response to commands from the driver through the parking brake switch, the EPB (electronic parking brake) module controls operation of the parking brake actuator. The actuator adjusts the tension of the brake cables to apply and release the rear brake calipers. Features of the parking brake include:
- Manual apply.
- Manual release.
- Automatic release.
A service routine to release cable tension, using Jaguar approved diagnostic equipment, must be performed prior to working on the EPB (electronic parking brake) system. This decouples the components, to prevent damage to the actuator, and inhibits all parking brake switch functions. There is also a procedure for the emergency release of cable tension.
