HVAC Whistle Sound

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves modifying the HVAC housing.

MODELS:

2006 (XK) Commander

2006 (XH) Commander (International Markets)

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles built on prior to September 4, 2005.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The vehicle operator may notice a whistle sound from the glove box area when HVAC system is on and in the recirculation mode while traveling at speeds above 105 kph (65 mph).

DIAGNOSIS:

Operate the HVAC in recirculation mode at low blower with windows closed traveling at speeds the customer detected whistle. If the whistle sound can be detected in recirculation mode then switch to fresh air mode to see if whistle sound goes away. If the whistle sound is still heard further diagnosis is required. If whistle sound only occurs in recirculation mode, perform Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Open the glove box.

2. Separate the glove box damper rod from the right side of the glove box by sliding the rod towards the rear of the vehicle to release it from the bin.

3. Open the glove box and carefully use fingers to press down on the glove box open stops at the top of the bin, to allow the glove box to rotate down toward the carpet.

4. Rotate the box down and release the door hinges at the bottom and remove the glove box.

5. Remove the screws that secure the recirculation door actuator to the HVAC housing.

6. Remove the recirculation door actuator from the HVAC housing and disconnect the wire harness connector from the actuator.

7. Remove and set a side the recirculation door actuator.

8. Remove the drive gear that the actuator engages, if it did not come off with the actuator.





9. Remove a portion of gear stop material on HVAC housing so that the recirculation door can bottom out in recirculation mode before the gear contacts the hard stop on the housing (Fig. 1) or (Fig. 2).

10. Clean the HVAC housing and vehicle interior of any debris or foreign material.

11. Install the drive gear to recirculation door actuator.

12. Install the actuator to the HVAC housing bosses. Tighten the screws to 2.2 Nm (20 in. lbs.).
