Liftgate Trim Panel Tapping or Squeak/Chirp Sound
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves isolating the liftgate trim panel and/or adjusting the retainer clips.
MODELS:
2007 MK49 Compass
NOTE:
This bulletin applies to MK49 vehicles built through May 1, 2007 (MDH 0501XX).
DIAGNOSIS:
Some customers may experience a squeak/chirp or tapping sound from the rear of the vehicle while driving. If the noise is a squeak/chip sound, the metal retainer clips on the trim panel need to be adjusted and if the sound is a tapping sound, the lower edge of the trim panel will be isolated from the liftgate sheet metal. Determine if the noise is originating at the rear liftgate. If the noise is coming from the rear liftgate, perform the Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Is the noise experienced a squeak/chirp sound?
a. Yes, Proceed to next step.
b. No, a tapping sound is heard? Proceed to Step # 6
2. Remove the liftgate trim panel, Refer to the detailed removal procedures available in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT under: Service Info > 23 - BODY > LIFTGATE > PANEL - TRIM > REMOVAL
3. Lay the trim panel face down on a protected surface.
4. Using a small, flat blade screwdriver, spread the ears on all of the metal retainer clips on the back side of the trim panel about .5 mm, (.020 in) on each side, 1 mm, (.040 in) total.
5. While the trim panel is removed, install the foam tape in locations as described in the next step while panel is removed, (even if tapping sound was not experienced).
6. Using C-4755 TRIM STICK or equivalent, pry the bottom of the trim panel away from the door, turn trim stick on edge and install a 3/8 X 1 piece of High Density Urethane Foam Tape, p/n 05019056AA on the back side of the panel at three locations shown in (Fig. 1).
7. If trim panel was removed, reinstall. Refer to the detailed installation procedures available in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT under: Service Info> 23 - BODY > LIFTGATE > PANEL - TRIM> INSTALLATION.
