Charging System - Alternator Is Inoperative

SUBJECT:
3.0L Diesel Alternator Inoperative

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves installing an alternator and a splash shield on the alternator.

MODELS:

2006 - 2009 (LE) 300/300C Touring (International Markets)

2005 - 2009 (WH) Grand Cherokee (International Markets)

2007 - 2008 (WK) Grand Cherokee

2006 - 2009 (XH) Commander (International Markets)

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to:

^ all 2007 and 2008 WK vehicles equipped with a 3.0L diesel engine (sales code EXL)

^ all LE/WH/XH vehicles equipped with a 3.OL diesel engine (sales code EXL) built before June 17, 2008 (MDH00617XX)

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The vehicle operator or technician may notice oil marks on the alternator. This condition can only happen while pouring the oil into the engine and care is not taken to ensure none is spilled.

DIAGNOSIS:
If the alternator is inoperative perform the repair procedure.





PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Replace the alternator. Refer to the detailed removal procedures available in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT under: Service Info > 08 - Electrical > 8F - Engine Systems > Charging > Generator (Alternator) > Removal/Installation - 3.0L Diesel.

2. Install the splash shield (p/n 04801798aa) on top of the alternator. This splash shield snaps into the grooves on top of the alternator.
