Vehicle Security System
Land Rover products have used different alarm systems depending on the year and vehicle model.
The systems used from 1992 will be explained in the following section. The primary focus will be on the operation of these security systems.
The 1992-1993 RR Classic
The 1992-1993 RR Classic security systems have two major components: a remote control transmitter and the vehicle main control unit. The main control unit, located inside the vehicle contains a microprocessor which provides perimetric monitoring of the vehicle, locks and unlocks the four doors and tailgate. The control unit also activates the alarm siren if the hood, tailgate or doors are opened after locking or if the remote button is pushed for more than two seconds indicating an emergency or a panic situation.
The 1992 RR Classic security system components and locations are as follows:
Component Location
Alarm Harness Assembly Runs from circular vehicle alarm connector in front of charcoal canister, through the firewall behind the evaporator blower motors to the alarm ECU located under the center dash coin tray.
Alarm Siren Next to windshield washer reservoir.
Alarm System ECU Beneath center dash coin tray.
Signal Lamp Flash Relay Behind evaporator fan cover panel.
and Fuse
Remote Transmitter Two supplied per vehicle.
1992 remote learning is performed by replacing the complete chip set in the Security ECU and remotes.
NOTE: ROM chip contacts must face contact remote contacts.
To code a remote chip to the ECU, perform the following:
1. Remove access cover from ECU and insert new ROM chip into socket provided. Note position of momentary contact button next to DIP switches.
2. Switch "on" ignition, press momentary contact button on the ECU release. Switch "off' ignition.
3. Repeat procedure for additional transmitter ROMs.
4. Install encoded ROM's into their transmitters and test for operation.
NOTE: The ECU has the capacity to store a maximum of four (4) different chip codes.
The 1993 RR Classic security system is similar to the 1992 system except for the following changes:
- Integrated wiring harness (factory).
- Relocated ECU - attached to the left hand steering column support bracket.
- Lamp flash/horn relays - attached to the ECU case.
- Underhood siren deleted - vehicle horns are used instead of siren.
- New coding procedure for replacement remote handset or PROM's.
The important information regarding the security system controls and operation are as follows:
Controls
1. Remote Control Transmitter
- To arm/disarm the security system and simultaneously lock/unlock the doors and tailgate.
- To activate the panic mode function.
LED Indicator (Light Emitting Diode)
- Will illuminate when the control signal is being transmitted.
- Low battery indication: when the intensity (brightness) of the LED is decreased (dimmed), replace the remote battery.
2. Status LED
The status LED is mounted in the center of the dashboard and is used by the owner to monitor the alarm status and tripped alarm warning identification. The LED, when flashing; will warn a would-be thief that the vehicle is protected by a security system.
3. Siren
The siren is installed in the engine compartment. It will sound when the system is triggered. The siren will also emit one "chirp"* when arming the system and two "chirps"* when disarming.
System Operation
1. Arming
- Close all windows, doors hood and tailgate and turn off interior dome light.
- Remove key from ignition and exit the vehicle.
- Press the button on the remote transmitter.
This will activate the alarm and simultaneously lock the doors and tailgate.
You will also observe that the status LED will flash, the siren will emit one "chirp"*, and the vehicle's turn signal lights will flash once.
NOTE: If the doors, hood or tailgate are left open or if the interior dome light remains turned on after the system has been armed for 45 seconds, the siren/horn will sound as a reminder that the vehicle has not been secured. After the system has been armed for 45 seconds, opening a door, the hood or the tailgate will trigger the siren/horn instantly.

2. Disarming
There are two ways to disarm the system - by remote control transmitter or by key.
Disarming Using The Remote Control Transmitter
Press the button on the remote control transmitter. It will disarm the vehicle and simultaneously unlock the doors and tailgate. You will also observe that the LED will stop flashing, the siren will emit two "chirps",* and the vehicle's turn signal lights will flash twice.
Disarming by Ignition Key
- Unlock and enter the vehicle.
NOTE: This method of disarming will trigger the alarm instantly. Use this method only if you have lost or misplaced your remote control transmitter.
- Insert the ignition key and turn the key to the "ON" position. The siren will stop and the LED will cease flashing.
3. Panic Mode
In either armed or disarmed condition, the siren can be activated intentionally in case of emergency.
To Activate the Panic Function
The panic function is activated by pressing the button on the remote control transmitter continuously for approximately two seconds - the siren/horn will sound and the turn signal lights will flash for 60 seconds. By continuing to depress the button, the siren/horn will be activated again.
To Stop the Panic Function
Similar to disarming, press (but do not continue to hold) the button on the transmitter or turn the ignition key to the "ON" position.
4. Tripped Warning Indication
When disarming by the remote control transmitter, the system will indicate whether the system has been triggered while you were away from your vehicle. If the security system has been triggered during your absence the system will alert you upon disarming by blinking the status LED and emitting three "chirps"*.
NOTE: The tripped sensor indication will not work if the system is disarmed by the ignition key. The memory will be cleared when the ignition is turned to the "ON" position or when the system is armed again.
