Engine: Service and Repair

ENGINE REPLACE
1. Release fuel pressure as outlined under Powertrain Management, Fuel and Air Induction.
2. Remove hood and battery.
3. Remove radiator and oil coolers.
4. Remove fuel supply line at fuel rail and fuel return line at pressure regulator.
5. Disconnect throttle cable and position aside.
6. Remove ram housing and air flow sensor.
7. Remove air cleaner assembly.
8. Remove alternator.
9. Remove A/C compressor from mounting and position aside.
10. Disconnect hose from power steering fluid reservoir to pump and plug end.
11. Disconnect hose from power steering pump to steering box and plug end.
12. Disconnect fuel temperature and coolant temperature sensor connectors.
13. Disconnect coil leads.
14. Tag and disconnect each fuel injector connector.
15. Remove engine harness from behind fuel rail and position aside.
16. Remove transmission fluid cooler from engine block.
17. Remove righthand and lefthand engine mount bolts.
18. Attach suitable lifting chains and hoist.
19. Lift engine enough to remove rubber engine mount insulators, then lower engine until it rests on mounting brackets. Remove lifting chains and hoist.
20. Remove heater hoses attached to top of righthand cylinder head cover.
21. Remove ground strap from rear of lefthand cylinder head. Do not remove from retaining clip at this time.
22. Remove all electrical harnesses from retaining clips at rear of engine.
23. Remove transmission breather pipes from retaining clip on rear lifting eye.
24. Remove top two bolts securing bell housing to cylinder block.
25. Raise and support front of vehicle.
26. Remove bell housing bottom cover. Remove gasket from bell housing face.
27. Remove nuts securing exhaust downpipes to manifolds, then the heat shield from righthand downpipe.
28. Remove electrical leads from starter motor solenoid.
29. Disconnect oil level sensor connector.
30. On models with automatic transmission, remove drive plate as follows:
a. Rotate crankshaft pulley until two access holes in drive plate/ring gear assembly are visible.
b. Remove two bolts visible through access holes. Mark bolts and holes for installation reference.
c Rotate crankshaft 180degrees and remove two remaining bolts.
31. On all models, remove remaining bell housing to cylinder block bolts.
32. Remove starter motor ground strap.
33. Lower vehicle.
34. Position suitable jack under transmission.
35. Attach suitable lifting chains and hoist.
36. Raise engine slightly and separate engine and transmission.
37. Remove engine from vehicle.
38. Reverse procedure to install.
