Description

DESCRIPTION

The automatic transmissions fitted to the New Range Rover are specially tailored versions of the ZF4HP22 and ZF4HP24 units, used by several manufacturers of high performance vehicles. The ZF4HP22 gearbox is used on 4.0 litre models. To accommodate the extra engine power of 4.6 litre models the ZF4HP24 unit is used and incorporates a larger torque converter and oil cooler.

A three element torque converter delivers the power to a four speed epicyclic transmission. First and second gears are reduction ratios and third, is direct but fourth is an overdrive gear for high speed cruising. A lock up clutch, integral with the torque converter, operates to engage in third and fourth gear.

The illustration locates and identifies the main components within the automatic transmission.
