Replace Front Crankshaft Seal

SITUATION:
FRONT CRANKSHAFT SEAL LEAKING
It has been found that the front crankshaft seal can leak on some Discovery vehicles.
RESOLUTION:
REPLACE FRONT CRANKSHAFT SEAL
A new twin-lip seal has been introduced into production. Use the following procedure to replace the existing seal with the new design seal.
NOTE:
The repairs outlined in this TIB are to be performed to resolve customer complaint of the symptoms described.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Obtain radio security code and disconnect the battery negative terminal.
2. Refer to COOLING SYSTEM Repair section in the WSM and remove the cooling fan.
3. Loosen three water pump pulley bolts. (Figure 1).
4. Remove serpentine drive belt.
5. Remove water pump pulley bolts and remove pulley.
6. Remove crankshaft pulley bolt and remove pulley (Figure 2).
CAUTION:
Care must be exercised to avoid damage to the front cover seal recess when removing the seal.
7. Remove oil seal from front cover.
INSTALLATION
1. Clean crankshaft pulley seal journal.
2. Check crank pulley seal surface for damage.
3. Lubricate outer surface of seal.
4. Using LRT-12-089, install seal into timing cover (Figure 3).
5. Lubricate oil seal lips and install crankshaft pulley onto crankshaft.
6. Install crankshaft pulley bolt and torque to 270 Nm. (200 lb. ft.).
7. Make sure that the mating surface between water pump pulley and pump is clean.
3. Install water pump pulley.
9. Apply Loctite(R) and torque bolts to 24 Nm. (18 lb. ft.).
10. Install serpentine drive belt.
11. Refer to COOLING SYSTEM Repair section in the WSM and install cooling fan.
12. Connect battery negative terminal.
13. Code the radio.
14. Check engine oil level and add as necessary.
