DETAIL

A standard torque specification has been adopted for Range Rover Classic, Discovery and Defender models. A new process for preloading the bearing has been introduced in conjunction with this common specification. The new procedure and specification will improve hub bearing reliability.

ACTION REQUIRED

Information only: whenever overhauling hubs, or if end float is evident, use the new process detailed below. The workshop manual will be amended for future issues.

PROCEDURE

NEW HUB BEARING SETTING PROCESS

All Range Rover Classic, Discovery and Defender vehicles





1. Fit hub washer.

2. Fit hub nut.

3. Torque hub nut to 50 Nm (37 lbf.ft.).

4. Rotate hub assembly and ensure free rotation with no bearing play.

5. Back hub nut off 90° and torque to 10 Nm (90 lbf.in.). This will give the required end play of 0.01 mm (0.0004 in).

6. Fit locking tab washer.

7. Fit second hub nut and torque to 50 Nm (37 lbf.ft.).

8. Lock both inner and outer nuts with locking tab washer.
