SITUATION:

AFTER-MARKET CHILD SEATS MAY REQUIRE A TETHER TO SECURE THE CHILD SEAT

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

CHILD SEAT TETHER INSTALLATION (NON REAR AIR CONDITIONING VEHICLES)

1. Remove left rear speaker.

2. Remove interior "E" post finisher, housing left rear speaker.

3. Remove left rear passenger seatbelt idler.

4. Remove left alpine light interior trim.

5. Once alpine light interior trim has been removed, carefully push up the center/rear of headliner to locate tether bracket mounting holes.

6. Poke a pinhole through the headliner to locate center of mounting holes on body.

7. After locating the mounting holes trace the outside diameter of the spacer for the tether bracket with a pen onto the headliner over the location of the requested mounting hole.

8. Carefully cut along the outline creating a hole to access the requested mounting point.

WARNING:
To insure proper bolt retention, apply Loctite 242 to the threads of the bolt before installation.

9. Apply Loctite 242 to the threads of the bolt.

10. After clearing the hole through the headliner, insert the bracket into the bracket cover and install as shown in FIGURE 1.

11. Torque the bolt to 35 Nm (25 lbf.ft.).

12. Refit all trim pieces in reverse order taking care not to trap rear quarter glass interior seal behind trim panels.

13. Torque rear seatbelt idler to factory specification.

CHILD SEAT TETHER INSTALLATION (REAR AIR CONDITIONING VEHICLES)

1. Remove left rear speaker.

2. Remove interior "E" post finisher, housing left rear speaker.

3. Remove left rear passenger seatbelt idler.

4. Remove left alpine light interior trim.

5. Remove AC vents fitted to the rear door upper trim panel.

6. Remove rear door upper trim panel containing rear AC ductwork.

NOTE:
Insure that you remove the screw securing the rear header duct to the alpine light duct before removing the trim panel completely from the vehicle.

7. Place rear door upper trim panel "face up" (finished side up) on a workbench.

8. Before cutting, outline the required notch to be cut in the upper trim panel to allow installation of the tether bracket to the requested location (left, center, or right of vehicle). Use FIGURE 2 to locate and size the notch in the trim panel (all notches are centered on the requested mounting point).

9. Carefully, cut along the outline creating a notch to access the area of the intended tether bracket.

NOTE:
Trimming of the lip on the rear edge of upper trim panel may be necessary as shown in Figure 2. If needed, trim along the valley of the radius of the lip, insuring that the cut line is straight.

WARNING:
To insure proper bolt retention, apply Loctite 242 to the threads of the bolt before installation

10. Apply Loctite 242 to the threads of the bolt.

11. Insert the bracket into the bracket cover and install as shown in FIGURE 1.

12. Torque the bolt to 35 Nm (25 lbf.ft.).

13. Install the modified rear door upper trim panel (using the front 2 fasteners only on center mounted tether brackets), insuring that the notch lines up with the installed tether bracket.

NOTE:
Bolts should be left loose until the AC vents are properly located and fit into the trim panel.

14. Install both of the AC vents into the trim (the solid white dot should be in the lower position on both vents).

15. Tighten all fasteners, insuring neat and precise fit of all removed trim.

16. Check operation of vents.
