Recall - Inadvertent Air Bag Deployment

No: D488
Ref: WSM Section 75
Issue: 1
Date: 03/20/98

RECALL
Fused Link Installation to Prevent Inadvertent Air Bag Deployment

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

DISCOVERY (U) RA072457 to TA200000
SA500000 to VA558893
TA700000 to WA754229

RANGE ROVER CLASSIC (LH) SA645246 to SA662245

SITUATION:

INTERMITTENT ELECTRICAL FAULT COULD DEPLOY AIR BAG

Land Rover has established that in certain circumstances chafing can occur to a cruise control wire. The resulting intermittent ground could cause the rotary coupler to fail, which in turn could initiate an involuntary deployment of the air bag.

To ensure customer vehicles are protected, Land Rover has initiated a voluntary Recall Action on all vehicles within the affected VIN range to fit an additional fuse to protect the rotary coupler. Discovery vehicles built after WA754229 have been fitted with the link-lead fuse.

RESOLUTION:

INSTALL FUSED LINK

A fused link lead will be added to the cruise control circuitry to provide protection of the rotary coupler. All Discovery vehicles in the VIN range and all Classic Range Rover derivatives fitted with a driver-side air bag will require the installation of the fused link lead within the steering column.

All affected vehicles in the specified VIN ranges currently held in inventory as new or used vehicles must be repaired prior to sale.

PARTS INFORMATION:

STC4195K Fused link lead

WARRANTY CLAIMS:

D488 Time 0.30 hrs.
Install fused link lead

All owners/lessees of vehicles within the affected VIN range are eligible to have this procedure performed at no charge, regardless of the vehicles age or mileage.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

INSPECTION

1. Inspect under the hood for a Recall sticker or the lower screw on the bottom cowl of the steering column for green paint (Figure 1) to determine if the Recall action has been performed.

2. If the Recall has been performed no further action is required.

FUSED LINK INSTALLATION DISASSEMBLY

1. Remove the three screws securing the lower cowl to the underside of the steering column. (Figure 1)

2. Carefully detach the lower cowl from the upper half.

3. Locate the white six-way connector (C2010) connecting the steering column harness to the rotary coupler. (Figure 2)

4. Disconnect the six-way connector.

REPAIR AND ASSEMBLY

1. Install the fused link lead (STC4195K) between the two connector halves ensuring that both multi-plugs snap together securely. (Figure 3)

2. Tape back any excess harness ensuring that the harness cannot be trapped, foul any switch gear or rattle within the cowl assembly.

3. Install the lower cowl and tighten the three screws securely.

4. Apply a small dab of green paint to the lower screw head (Figure 1) to provide visual identification that this Recall work has been completed.

NOTE:
Campaign labels are available in a 100-pack, part number LRN0001LABEL.

5. To identify that Recall Service Action D488 has been performed, complete and install a Service Campaign label on the vertical portion of the radiator support panel and cover the label with a clear acrylic cover. (Figure 4)
