Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Procedure

Perform the diagnostic procedures and repairs outlined in the following pages for the repair of leaks associated with power assisted steering system hose clamps.

NOTE:
Stepless(R) Ear Clamp Installation Precautions

^ Use only the Land Rover supplied pincer pliers.

^ It is important to properly crimp the Stepless(R) Ear Clamps. Do not use pincers with a down depressor or an improper jaw structure that may impair the built in spring action.

^ When finished the ear should have a gap. Some spring back is normal (figure 1).

Procedure

1. Plug the vent hole on the PAS reservoir fill cap to prevent leakage in the next operation.

2. Loosen the reservoir mounting bracket clamp bolt, raise and invert the reservoir to gain access to the existing "worm drive" hose clamps.

3. Remove the upper radiator mounting bracket to assist access.

4. Remove worm drive clamp from the reservoir return hose (smaller) and discard clamp. Remove return hose from reservoir.

NOTE:
If the hose ends are excessively swollen or damaged due to fluid leaks making the new clamps difficult to install, replace the hoses following normal warranty procedures.

5. Slip a 21.0 mm ear clamp down the return hose just past the steel band where the hose meets the hard pipe on the steering box end of the hose (Figure 2).

6. Pinch the clamp securely using the supplied pinching tool.

7. Fit the 21.0 mm Stepless(R) Ear Clamp on the return hose at the reservoir end.

8. Ensure the hose is not kinked or twisted. Install the hose and pinch the clamp (Figure 3).

9. Remove the feed hose from the reservoir. Fit the 24.1 mm clap on the reservoir feed hose.

10. Fit the hose on the reservoir and pinch the clamp (Figure 3).

11. Remove upper fan shroud

12. Remove serpentine belt

13. Remove the 3 bolts securing the PAS pump pulley to the pump shaft.

14. Remove PAS pump from bracket.

NOTE:
Observe position of hose relative to pump to ensure correct orientation with new clamp.

15. Invert PAS pump and remove and discard existing worm drive clamp.

16. Remove the feed hose from the pump and install the 24.1 mm ear clamp. (Figure 3)

17. install hose and ensure hose is not kinked or twisted before crimping clamp.

18. Install the PAS pump and PAS pump pulley.

19. Apply Loctite(R) 272 to threads of the three pulley bolts and torque to 25 Nm (19 lbf. ft.)

20. Install serpentine belt, fan shroud, upper radiator support bracket and PAS reservoir into the reservoir support bracket.

21. Ensure hose is clear of serpentine drive belt and verify that all hoses are correctly routed.

22. Remove plug from reservoir cap and tighten the reservoir clamp bolt.

23. Fill the reservoir with new PAS fluid to the "MAX" mark on fill cap dip stick.

24. Bleed the system according to Workshop Manual, Repair Section 57.

25. Start engine and check for fluid leaks.
