R380 Gearbox Sealant Specification

SITUATION:

OIL LEAKAGE FROM GEARBOX JOINT FACES

Discovery and Defender vehicles equipped with R380 manual gearboxes may be subject to lubricant seepage at the joints as the result of ineffective sealing.

RESOLUTION:

SEAL GEARBOX JOINTS WITH NEW SEALANT

A new sealant material has been introduced into production. Proper application of this sealant, "Marston 607" (STC4404), has proven effective in eliminating lubricant leaks from the transmission joint areas. Whenever repairs are undertaken on R380 manual gearboxes the new sealant should be applied. The sealant specification in Overhaul Manual LRL0003ENG Edition 2 is superseded by the information in this Bulletin.

PARTS INFORMATION:

STC4404 Marston 607 Sealant 300 ml tube

WARRANTY CLAIMS:

Material allowance for a single gearbox overhaul is 100 ml or $6.00 per overhaul repair.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

CAUTION:
All joint surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned and degreased to remove all oil residues prior to application of the sealant.





1. Apply new specification sealant (STC4404) to surfaces indicated in Figure 1 during repairs:

^ Position A - Front cover to case

^ Position B - Case to center plate

^ Position C - Center plate to extension housing

^ Position D - Remote control housing to extension housing
