Damaged Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Replacement

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
RANGE ROVER (LP) TA318243 to VA337049

SITUATION:

OVER-TORQUED HEATED OXYGEN SENSORS MAY FAIL IN SERVICE

Over-tightening of the sensors in their housing during the manufacturing process has been determined to cause failures of HO2S sensors. Within the VIN range above it is possible that some HO2S sensors will fail because of the above problems.

Failures occur when the ceramic section within the sensor develops a crack which propagates. When a sensor fails it will cause the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) to illuminate and emission levels to increase.

RESOLUTION:

REPLACE ORIGINAL PRODUCTION SENSORS ON AFFECTED VEHICLES

Range Rovers within the above VIN range have four oxygen sensors (on either side of the catalyst on both banks of the exhaust). The original sensors installed during production are to be replaced as part of this Service Action.

One or more of these sensors may have already been replaced on some vehicles in response to MIL illumination or other faults.

^ The appended computer list indicates vehicles within the VIN range which have had new sensors installed during repairs at your dealership.

^ Please refer to your service record files to determine the exact location of any sensors replaced as part of the previous repair.

Any sensor which has not been previously replaced, will be replaced as part of this service action. The work should be performed at the next service opportunity.

If you are unable to determine the exact location of sensors replaced previously, all four sensors should be replaced to ensure that all sensors have been properly installed.

^ Performance of this service action applies to affected vehicles up to 82,500 miles, the recommended service interval for this part.
