Interior - Front Electric Seat 'Rocking' Motion

No: 76/20/99/NAS
Ref:
Issue: 1
Date: 07/09/99

Front Electric Seat "Rock"

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

RANGE ROVER (LP) Up to 99MY

SITUATION:

FRONT SEAT "ROCKS"

Under some conditions a front seat may "rock" when rough surfaces are encountered. Free-play in the rail/drive mechanism may allow the seat to move.

RESOLUTION:

SPACER MODIFICATION

To remove the free-play in the mechanism, modification of the fore/aft motor mounting spacers is required. The altered spacers will tighten the tolerances in the seat mechanism and reduce the free-play which permits the rocking motion.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

MODIFICATION OF SEAT MOTOR MOUNTING SPACER

1. Refer to the WSM and remove the four seat-frame mounting bolts.

2. Carefully tip the seat backward in the vehicle to gain access to the fore/aft mounting bolts (Figure 1).

CAUTION:
A maximum of 2 mm (0.080 in.) of material may be removed from the spacer. Removing more than 2 mm may cause damage or binding in the mechanism.

3. Perform the following modification to each mounting bolt spacer:

^ Remove one side fore/aft mounting bolt and spacer (Figure 2).

^ Mark the spacer to identify the maximum amount of material to be removed.

^ Grind or file 2 mm from the neck of the spacer as shown in Figure 3.

^ Install modified fore/aft mounting spacer and bolt.

^ Go to step 3 and perform the same procedure on the unmodified side fore/aft mounting bolt spacer.

4. Position seat and install using removed bolts.

5. Confirm that seat movement is smooth and that the repair has reduced or eliminated seat rock symptoms.
