We have received a number of reports of a knock which comes from the steering column when moving the steering wheel from side to side. The knock is due to the outer column tube being slightly oval. Follow the procedure below to eliminate the knock.

ACTION REQUIRED

Upon customer complaint of a knock on the steering column, check the steering column for a definite knock from side to side, if confirmed then follow the procedure detailed below.

PROCEDURE

Refer to the workshop Manual section 57 steering column.





1. Sit in the vehicle and check for a column knock, by holding the steering wheel at each side and moving from side to side (see illustration "A"). Column should be in fully extended position.

2. If a knock can be confirmed then check the date Code, this can be located at the bottom of the column, one of the securing bolts may have to be removed to confirm the date stamp, (see illustration "B" included above with illustration "A".

3. The date stamp is 3 or 4 digits long, the 2nd and 3rd digit is the week code, (i.e. 937 or 9370).

4. If the week code is 36 or 37 then the steering column will need to be replaced.
