Procedure 5 and 6
Noise 5:Ratcheting noise when turning:
On the steering wheel side of the rotary coupler is a spring loaded plastic pin. When the pin is extended a mechanism inside the rotary coupler latches the two halves of the coupler to prevent unintended rotation (this protects the indexing of the coupler and ribbon). When assembled, the steering wheel must depress the pin to release the mechanism else a ratcheting or clicking noise will occur when the coupler rotates. When this type of noise is present, follow the procedure below to check the relative position of the steering wheel and rotary coupler.
Procedure 5:
1) Remove airbag and steering wheel (Section 76 of WSM).
2) Inspect steering wheel and steering shaft for any conditions which may be preventing the steering wheel from properly seating on the shaft. If any are found, correct, re-assemble and retest. If noise persists, proceed.
3) Remove the rotary coupler (Section 76 of the WSM).
4) Inspect the position of the switch gear assembly on the steering column. Looking downward on the column and just forward of the switchgear, check that the 5mm hole in the column is exactly half covered by the sleeve on the switch gear. See illustration.
5) To adjust. look at the switchgear from the drivers position. Loosen the Phillips head screw in the switchgear located directly below the steering shaft (at the six o'clock position, it may be necessary to rotate the signal canceling device to gain access) by six full turns (do not fully unscrew) then sharply tap the screw driver to loosen the switchgear. Slide the switchgear to the proper position on the column then retighten the screw. Make certain the switchgear is secure on the column.
6) Re-install the rotary coupler.
7) IMPORTANT - Use care when reinstalling the steering wheel. The dowel pins on the rotary coupler must align with the drive holes in the steering wheel - and - the rectangular drive tabs on the steering wheel hub must align with the turn signal canceling device on the switchgear. Improper alignment will result in the switchgear being displaced when the steering wheel is reinstalled.
Noise 6:
If there are any other noises associated with the rotary coupler (such as rubbing, dragging type sounds) that are not described above, then the rotary coupler must be replaced.
Procedure 6:
Follow the installation process as described in Procedure 5.
