Suspension - Front/Rear Knocking Noises
No: 64/01/99/NASRef:
Issue: 1
Date: 04/09/99
Suspension Noise and Bolt Replacement
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
RANGE ROVER (LP) Up to WA408546
SITUATION:
KNOCKING NOISES FROM FRONT OR REAR SUSPENSION
Customer complaints of knocking noises from the front or rear axle areas when cornering may be the result of insufficient clamp applied to front and rear panhard rods and composite rear radius arms.
RESOLUTION:
When a customer complaint is confirmed on vehicles prior to VIN WA394184, perform both panhard rod and radius arm repairs.
On complaint vehicles in VIN range WA394184 to WA408546 only radius arm repairs are required. Refer to the notes and Figure 1 in PARTS INFORMATION to ensure that correct specification locknuts ANR3140 are used.
PARTS INFORMATION:
ANR4386 Bolt - flanged head panhard rods Qty. 4
RYG101340 Bolt-flanged head radius arms Qty. 2
ANR3140 Locknut - panhard rods/radius arms Qty. 6
NOTE:
Locknut ANR3140 must be to the correct material hardness specification for the above applications. This is identified by the presence of grade code 10 on the nut flange, see Figure 3.
All ANR3140 now supplied by Land Rover Parts are to this condition.
NOTE:
Nuts coded grade "8" have previously been produced (grade code "8" in same location as "10"). These MUST NOT be used for this application as they are not suitable for the revised torque.
Any stock which is found to be to grade "8" specification can be used on other applications for ANR3140, where grade "10" material is not a requirement.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
VEHICLES PRIOR TO VIN WA394184 - PANHARD RODS
WARNING:
Support vehicle frame before disconnecting front or rear panhard rods.
1. Install new bolts ANR4386 at each end of the front and rear panhard rods (Figure 2).
2. Install new locknuts ANR3140 at the body fixing ends of the panhard rods. Ensure that these are to grade 10 specification.
NOTE:
Refer to notes and Figure 1 in PARTS INFORMATION.
3. Tighten panhard rod bolts/nuts to the new torque figure of 240 Nm (175 lbf.ft.).
NOTE:
Vehicles from VIN WA394184 to WA408546 will have had the changes to the panhard rod fasteners already implemented during production. Only the rear radius arm bolts and nuts as shown in Figure 3 require attention. Perform rear radius arm repair as outlined upon customer complaint.
REAR RADIUS ARMS
WARNING:
Replace the radius arm bolts one at a time to maintain rear axle location while working.
1. Release shock absorber lower fasteners for access and replace bolt ANR2570 with new bolt RYG101340, (Figure 3) on both radius arms.
2. Remove locknuts ANR3140 at the forward end of the radius arms, (Figure 3), leaving the bolts in place.
3. Reassemble with new locknuts ANR3140, ensuring that these nuts are to grade "10" specification.
NOTE:
Refer to notes and Figure 1 in PARTS INFORMATION.
4. Tighten the replaced radius arm bolts/nuts to the new torque figure of 240 Nm (175 lbf.ft.).
