Windshield Finisher - Wind Noise/Vibration: Overview
No: 76/09/97/NASReplaces 76/22/96/US
Ref: WSM Section 76
Issue: 1
Date: 06/20/97
PRIDE IV 6-23
Top Windshield Finisher
Wind Noise Reduction
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
RANGE ROVER (LP) up to 1998 MY (VIN to be determined)
SITUATION:
GAP BETWEEN FINISHER AND WINDSHIELD CAUSES VIBRATION
NOTE:
When troubleshooting the location of a dash vibration complaint or wind noise, ensure that the HVAC fan is at the lowest speed. The finisher vibration noise can be confused with the heater flap vibration noise (Refer to TIB 80/02/96/US).
A gap between the top windshield finisher and the windshield is likely to cause a vibration noise from the finisher at highway speeds.
If such a gap is observed during PDI or at a maintenance service, or if a customer complains of noise and vibration heard in the dash area while driving at highways speeds, the following procedure should be completed.
RESOLUTION:
NEW SEALING PROCESS AND RETAINING CLIP REDUCE WIND NOISE
Two elements are necessary for the complete resolution of the problem:
Installation of a new design clip which holds the finisher more securely. Application of elastomeric sealant between the finisher and the glass.
The new clip was introduced into production as of VA352947. Clip and finisher installation is only necessary for vehicle built before this VIN.
The installation of elastomeric sealant began at the port of entry in May 1997. Completion of this repair is indicated by a dab of white paint on the upper retaining screw on the driver's side A" post finisher. Check for this paint dab before beginning this repair procedure.
