1999 MY Interstate Battery Installation

SITUATION:
INSTALLATION OF INTERSTATE BATTERIES
Because of slight dimensional differences between the OEM batteries and the Interstate replacement batteries, the use of spacers is required in certain applications.
RESOLUTION:
INSTALL REPLACEMENT INTERSTATE BATTERY USING PROPER SPACERS
Range Rover:
If present, ensure that the plastic "U-section" spacer between the hold-down bracket and the battery top is retained for use with the Interstate battery.
Discovery Series II:
When installing an Interstate MT-34 replacement battery ensure that the Interstate height adapter (Interstate number 34/78) is securely clipped to the bottom of the battery.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
BATTERY REMOVAL
WARNING:
During battery removal, always disconnect the negative battery terminal first. Accidental contact of wrench to any grounded metal part could cause a severe spark, possibly resulting in personal injury.
1. Refer to Workshop Manual and remove battery cover.
2. Disconnect negative and positive battery terminals.
3. If a Discovery, remove locknuts and securing nuts from battery clamp.
4. If a Range Rover, remove locknut, securing nut and retaining bolt from battery clamp.
5. Remove clamp, spacer, if present, and battery.
RANGE ROVER REPLACEMENT BATTERY INSTALLATION
1. Install battery.
2. Connect positive battery terminal and torque clamp bolt to 4-6 Nm (35-53 lbf.in.).
3. Connect negative battery terminal and torque clamp bolt to 4-6 Nm (35-53 lbf.in.).
4. Install battery clamp, battery spacer and torque fasteners as follows:
^ Rear lower nut 1.7-2.3 Nm (15-20 lbf.in.)
^ Rear upper locknut 7-10 Nm (62-89 lbf.in.)
^ Front bolt 22-28 Nm (16-20 lbf.ft.)
5. Install battery cover and secure.
DISCOVERY SERIES II REPLACEMENT BATTERY INSTALLATION
1. Install height adapter on base of battery.
2. Install battery/adapter assembly.
3. Position battery clamp.
4. Install four battery clamp and spacer nuts.
5. Torque nuts and locknuts as follows:
^ Lower nuts 1.3 Nm (12 lbf.in.)
^ Upper locknuts 7-10 Nm (62-89 lbf.in.)
6. Connect positive battery terminal and torque clamp bolt to 4-6 Nm (35-53 lbf.in.).
7. Connect negative battery terminal and torque clamp bolt to 4-6 Nm (35-53 lbf.in.).
