Advanced Evaporative Loss Control System (EVAPS)

New Tools and Procedures

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

RANGE ROVER 4.0/4.6 (LP) from MY 1998
DISCOVERY (LJ) from VA546030 and VA714242

SITUATION:

INTRODUCTION OF ADVANCED EVAPS

All vehicles built after the above VINs are equipped with an advanced evaporative loss control system required by legislation. This TIB provides basic system information and introduces the diagnostic tools required to troubleshoot the system.

NOTE:
For Discovery models refer to the November 1996 amendments to the Workshop Manual, Section 17. 1998 Range Rover Manuals will cover the Advanced EVAPS information.

RESOLUTION:

NEW EVAPS DIAGNOSTIC STATION AND TESTING

If during diagnosis of a MIL and OBD fault one of the new DTCs is stored, it may be necessary to use the new EVAPS Diagnostic Station (EDS) and ultrasonic leak detector to establish the cause of the problem leak.

TestBook diagnostic modules have been developed for use in conjunction with the new EDS. Not all DTCs require the use of the EDS however in some cases it must be used to determine the cause of the problem. TestBook will inform you when the use of the EDS is required. In general terms EVAPS electrical system troubleshooting can be performed without EDS, but leak testing pressure sensor response and similar tests will require pressurizing the fuel/EVAPS system using EDS.

An EVAPS service port adapter is required for use with Discovery vehicles. The adapter is connected between the purge valve and the carbon canister. Range Rover vehicles equipped with Advanced EVAPS have a service port installed at the factory.
