Left and Right Rear Door Inspection and Repair

A. Rear Door Latch Inspection

1. Open the door to be inspected.

NOTE:
The next step places the latch pawl in the fully seated position.

2. Loosen the 2 door case edge latch screws 4 turns each and retighten them to 4-5 Nm. (36-45 lbf. in.).

3. Perform the following inspection using first the exterior door handle and then the interior door handle to ensure that the latch pawl operates freely:

^ Observe the latch pawl (figure 9) and pull the release handle to its stop.

NOTE:
During the following operation check that the pawl does NOT stick or move sluggishly and that it returns to the fully seated position.

^ Continue to observe the pawl, and slowly return the handle to its rest position.

^ Repeat latch inspection using the interior release handle.

1. Close the door several times and verify that there is no "bounce" off of the door seal and that the latch works correctly.

2. If the paw operated freely during the inspections in step 3 and no door bounce is observed in step 4, inspect the remaining rear door.

3. If the pawl was sticking or sluggish during inspections in step 3 or if door bounce is experience in step 4, replace the latch as described in Section B.

B. Rear Door Latch Repair Procedure

1. Refer to the Workshop Manual, Section 76 and remove the door latch.

NOTE:
On some vehicles, the inboard latch bolt may have a spacer between the door and the latch. This spacer must be installed during assembly.

2. Install door case straightening tool (LRNA1327 shown in figure 10) as follows:

^ Place one nylon guide bushing on each 1/4x20 hex-screw and insert screw through latch mounting hole from the inside of the door assembly.

^ Place second nylon guide bushing on each hex- screw and secure guide bushing assemblies finger tight with provided hex-nut. (figure 11)
^ Orient tool pressure plates with "T" mark upward.

^ Wrap outer pressure plate in a 4 inch square paper gasket (to protect painted surface). Press plate and paper gasket over nylon bushings.

^ Position inner tool pressure plate over nylon bushings on the inside of the door case.

^ Install tool bolt with flat washer under head from inside door through center hole of tool assembly (figure 12).

^ Position flat washer on bolt, start the nut and tighten finger tight.

3. Tighten tool bolt/nut to 165 Nm. (120 lbf. ft.) to flatten the sheetmetal surfaces of the door case components.

4. Remove the tool and verify that any door case latch mounting surface sheetmetal irregularities or imperfections have been straightened.

5. If necessary, touch up any paint damage.

6. Install a new latch and gasket.

7. Tighten the latch screws to 4-5 Nm. (36-45 lbf. in.).

8. Before installing the door trim panel, refer to the Workshop Manual, section 76, and ensure that the door lock actuator and link rod are adjusted properly.

9. Ensure that the water curtain is sealed fully around the perimeter. Seal any small tears using waterproof tape.

C. Rear Door Functional Check

1. Perform the following inspection using first the exterior door handle and then the interior door handle to ensure that the latch paw operates freely:

^ Observe the latch pawl (figure 13) and pull the release handle to its stop.

NOTE:
During the following operation check that the paw does NOT stick or move sluggishly and that it returns to the fully seated position.

^ Continue to observe the pawl, and slowly return the handle to its rest position.

^ Repeat latch inspection using the interior release handle.

2. Check the operation of the door sill button with the central door lock remote and the vehicle key.

3. Close the door several times and verify that there is no "bounce" off of the door seal and that the latch works correctly.

4. Check operation of the power window.

5. Go to "Left and Right Rear Door Inspection and Repair" on page 8 and repeat rear door procedure for the opposite door.
