DETAIL
Land Rover North America has reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the existence of a manufacturing defect with safety consequences. The right front door on some 1995 and 1996 Discovery vehicles may fail to latch fully, causing the door to "bounce" back off of the door seals.
An extended length latch mounting fastener has been introduced to assure proper orientation of the right door latch relative to the mounting leg of the adjacent window frame. The new fastener must be installed on vehicles within the VIN ranges. In cases where latch loads have been excessive, replacement of the right front door latch may also be required.
To ensure that all latches on a vehicle are operating properly, all side door latches are to be inspected in accordance with this recall procedure. In addition, proper alignment and adjustment of the mechanisms and control rods may be conducted at the time of recall inspection to ensure customer satisfaction. (Refer to TIB 76/01/97/US and TIB 76/02/97/US for adjustment procedures for enhanced door operation.)
ACTION REQUIRED
Install latch mounting fastener and inspect all affected Discovery models for correct right hand door latch operation. Replace the door latch if required to ensure proper operation. Conduct check of all other side door latches to ensure proper operation. Repair any faults found.
