License Plate Lamp Water Ingress

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

SITUATION:

TAILGATE HANDLE WATER LEAK CONTAMINATES LICENSE PLATE LAMP

The tailgate handle assembly may, under certain conditions, be susceptible to water ingress. The water within the tailgate handle can migrate into the left-hand number plate lamp assembly and contaminate the lamp. Water ingress symptoms include an orange deposit on the lens inner surface.

RESOLUTION:

INSPECT FOR EVIDENCE OF CONTAMINATION AND REPAIR

Should a customer express concern that the left-hand number plate lamp lens is discolored refer to the Service Procedure detailed in this Bulletin.

DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

INSPECT AND REPAIR LICENSE PLATE LAMP

1. Check for evidence of discoloration of the left-hand lamp lens indicating water ingress into the lamp assembly of the tailgate door handle.

NOTE:
GTR lookup sequence is as follows: GTR Home > NAS > Service Information/LT Discovery Series 11/2004 > Workshop Manuals > Discovery Series II WSM 1999MY on (Temporary Test Style) > LIGHTING > Expand REPAIRS bookmark > Select "Housing - number plate lamp" link.

2. Refer to GTR Workshop Manual section 86.40.98 and remove the number plate lamp housing.

3. Remove and discard the discolored or water damaged lamp lens, lens securing, lens, gasket and bulb.

4. Remove the two spring retaining clips and discard.

5. Visually inspect the electrical wiring connections on the number plate lamp housing harness for evidence of corrosion to the wiring or connectors.

6. Clean or repair electrical connections as necessary.

7. Clean the number plate housing assembly to remove any corrosion deposits.





8. Drill a 6 mm (1/4 in) drain hole in the underside of the handle assembly to allow further water to drain. (Figure 1)

9. Install the new lamp into the left-hand door handle lamp location.

10. Refer to GTR Workshop Manual Section 86.40.98 and install the door handle assembly into the tailgate.
