Recall - PROM Update for EVAP DTML Fault Codes

No: RB167

*Issue: 2

Date: March 18, 2005*

RECALL ACTION
On-board Diagnostic Software Update

Updated information is shown with asterisks.

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE

SITUATION:

MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) ACTIVATION SOFTWARE

On vehicles with LEV and ULEV specifications, a fault exists in the software that monitors the electrical connection between the Diagnostic Leak - Tank Module (DMTL) pump motor and the Engine Control Module (ECM). An open circuit or short circuit to ground in the wire between the DMTL and ECM that switches on the pump motor should result in an MIL illumination and the appropriate DTC should be stored in OBD system. In the production software configuration these failure modes will only be reported by means of a temporary Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). The software does not function as intended.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

*VERIFY THAT VEHICLE VIN MATCHES RECALL PARAMETERS*

INSTALL UPDATED ECM TUNE

1. After verification that correct engine configuration is stated in the VIN, connect T4 to the vehicle.

2. Insert the "Archive 22" diagnostic CD.

NOTE:
The battery must be capable of maintaining a full charge during this process which is expected to take 15-18 minutes total.

3. Verify the battery is fully charged (12.6 V or greater).

4. Connect a battery charger set on a low amp current charge to maintain battery state during this process.

5. Using T4, observe all of the on-screen instructions presented and perform the following steps:

^ On the T4 Main Menu select * "Diagnostic System 6"*.

^ Select "Diagnostic System".

^ Select "Discovery II" and the correct "Model Year" for the vehicle being programmed.

^ Select "Petrol EMS".

^ Select "Vehicle Maintenance".

^ Select "ECM Checks and Renewals".

NOTE:
On the two following screens you must follow the instructions exactly to enable T4 to program the ECM without having to restart this process from the beginning.

^ At the screen indicating a "Compulsory Update" is required, respond "NO" to the question about hardware replacement.

NOTE:
On the next screen T4 will state the misleading message "NO FIXES AVAILABLE". Selecting "Continue" on this screen will advance the tune update procedure.

^ Select "Continue" at the "NO FIXES AVAILABLE" prompt.

^ * If a vehicle has been incorrectly identified as being part of this Campaign and was not eliminated by a careful VIN check, a "PROGRAMMING NOT REQUIRED" screen will appear. Vehicles displaying this screen are not LEV or ULEV specification vehicles.

^ If the "PROGRAMMING NOT REQUIRED" screen is present, answer "NO" and exit the program attempt.*

*CAUTION:
For LEV and ULEV vehicles the next screen "About to Program ECU" will display the programming details. T4 displays several items including the Assembly Number. If T4 does not select the correct Assembly Number listed for the vehicle under repair, DO NOT PROCEED with the tune update.*

^ Compare the Assembly Number provided by T4 with the table shown.

^ * If T4 displays on the "About to Program ECU" screen the wrong Assembly Number for the tune about to be programmed for the vehicle contact the Land Rover Technical HelpLine for assistance (1-888-577-8577 Option 3).*

^ If T4 displays the correct Assembly Number for the vehicle being updated, select "Continue" to begin the ECM tune download procedure.

NOTE:
When T4 starts the ECM download, the screen will indicate the progress. The percent (%) download is indicated at the top of the screen indicating the process is active and that T4 has not locked up. The download will take approximately 15 minutes. When completed the page will advance to an "ECM PROGRAMMED SUCCESSFULLY" screen. After successful programming of the ECM, T4 will then advance through the required "post-programming" functions.

^ Select "Continue" on the next few screens until T4 displays the screen warning "ECM IMMOBILIZATION NOT SET UP."

^ Select "Program", to prompt the Motronic M5.2.1 ECM and Immobilizer ECM to synchronize their "rolling codes" and allow vehicle start-up.

6. When all programming and post-programming work has been completed, verify that the vehicle starts and runs.

7. When start-up has been confirmed, switch off the engine.

8. Exit to the T4 Main Menu.

9. Disconnect T4 and the battery charger from the vehicle.

INSTALL CAMPAIGN LABEL

NOTE:
Campaign labels are required for emissions-related Recalls in the United States.

1. When all specified repairs have been accomplished, prepare the campaign label (LRN0002LABEL) as follows:

a) Place the label on a hard surface.

b) Use a ballpoint pen to neatly write/scribe in the bare aluminum areas of the label the following information:

^ Service Campaign code "B167"

^ Your retailer code

^ The date of repair

2. Clean all grease and dirt from the radiator support member.

3. Peel the completed campaign label from the backing paper and position it on the cleaned area.

4. Roll the label with the special roller tool to ensure proper adhesion.
