SECTION: 206-05
Electric Parking Brake Warning Lamp Illuminated
Updated information is shown with asterisks.
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
Land Rover LR3 (LA) VIN: 5A000259 to 5A339115
CONDITION SUMMARY:
EPB WARNING LAMP ILLUMINATED
A customer may report a concern that the electronic parking brake (EPB) amber or red warning lamps are illuminated or that it is not possible to release the parking brake. A possible fault code displayed in EPB module is "C1A0016" - *control module circuit voltage below threshold.*
Cause:
The EPB wiring harness has an "open" type splice joint that provides a 12-volt supply to the EPB module. The customer concern above is a result of corrosion of this splice joint due to water ingress preventing the 12 volt supply reaching the EPB module.
Action:
Should a customer express concern regarding the above symptoms, refer to the Service Procedure detailed in this bulletin to replace the splice joint. *When performing this repair, refer to Technical Bulletin LA204-001 Issue 2 also and inspect for EAS connector water contamination.*

NOTE:
Repair procedures are under constant review, and therefore times are subject to change; those quoted here must be taken as guidance only. Always refer to DDW to obtain the latest repair time.
DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
INSTALL REPLACEMENT HARNESS SECTION
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the spare wheel and tire.
3. Remove the left-hand rear wheel and tire.
NOTE:
GTR lookup sequence is as follows:
GTR Home>NAS>Service Information/LR3/2005>Discovery 3/LR3 2005 Workshop Manual>Bookmark "204-05 Vehicle Dynamic Suspension"> Link "Air Suspension Compressor (60.50.10)"
4. Refer to GTR Workshop Manual Section 204-05, (60.50.10) and remove the air suspension compressor lower cover. (Figure 1)
CAUTION:
The compressor is to be released for access only. Air suspension pipes are to remain connected and undisturbed.
5. Refer to GTR Workshop Manual Section 204-05 (60.50.10) and release ONLY the three air suspension compressor retaining bolts to move the compressor for access. (Figure 2)
CAUTION:
EVAPS canister is to be removed for access only.
NOTE:
GTR lookup sequence is as follows:
GTR Home>NAS>Service Information/LR3/2005>Discovery 3/LR3 2005 Workshop Manual>Bookmark "303-13 Evaporative Emissions"> Link "Evaporative Emission Canister (17.15.13)".
6. Refer to GTR Workshop Manual Section 303-13 (17.15.13) and remove the evaporative emissions canister for access. (Figure 3)
7. Remove the parking brake actuator mounting bracket as follows: (Figure 4)
^ Release the air suspension pipe retaining clips.
^ Remove the two retaining nuts.
^ Remove the five retaining bolts.
^ Release the three wiring harness clips.
8. Disconnect the electronic parking brake actuator electrical connector. (Figure 5)
9. Remove the two wires from the electrical connector (terminals G4 and H4, wiring color green/yellow):
^ Remove the white locking cover.
^ Remove the black end cap by releasing the corner tags and sliding the cap off.
^ Release the green anti-back-out to the detent position.
^ Insert special tool (YRW500110) supplied in the repair kit into connector release holes to remove the terminals. (Figure 6)
NOTE:
The routing of the new harness must closely follow that of the original. The harness may not contact fuel lines or the stabilizer bar.
NOTE:
Figure 7 shows area of harness splice repair.
10. Route the EPB overlay harness carefully following the path of the original chassis harness.
11. Secure the new harness with cable ties, 50 mm (2 inches) from the electrical connector and at intervals of 150 mm (6 inches). (Figure 7)
CAUTION:
Care must be taken when splitting the conduit, so that internal wires are not damaged.
12. Carefully cut through the harness retaining tape. (Figure 8)
13. Cut the original wire (wiring color green/yellow), allowing enough free wire to allow splicing operation. (Figure 9)
14. Position the heat shrink sleeve onto the wire.
CAUTION:
The electrical connector must be securely crimped and connected.
15. Install and crimp the connections.
CAUTION:
Care must be taken when using a heat gun to avoid damage to the surrounding area.
16. Position the heat shrink wrap to the crimped connector and apply heat until the wrap is secure. (Figure 10)
17. Insert the new repaired wire inside the wiring conduit.
18. Using electrical tape, seal the conduit and new electrical connection.
CAUTION:
The Anti-backout cannot be installed unless the terminals are correctly installed. Force is NOT required.
19. Install the two new terminals into the park brake electrical connector as follows:
^ Align the two terminals so the rounded portion of the neck, faces towards the retracted anti-back-out device.
^ Insert the terminals and ensure they are correctly located.
^ Secure the electrical terminals with the anti-backout device.
20. Install the electrical connector.
21. Install the parking brake actuator mounting bracket as follows: (Figure 11)
^ Secure the three wiring harness clips.
^ Install the five retaining bolts and tighten to 22 Nm (16 lb-ft).
^ Install the two retaining nuts.
^ Secure the air suspension pipe retaining clips.
22. Refer to GTR section 303-13 and install the evaporative emissions canister.
23. Refer to GTR section 204-05 and install the air suspension compressor.
24. Install the air suspension compressor lower cover.
25. Install the left-hand rear wheel and tire and tighten wheel nuts to 140 Nm (103 lb-ft).
26. Install the spare wheel and tire.
27. Use T4 to clear any fault codes.
