SITUATION:

NEW WORKSHOP PROCEDURE TO REMOVE AND INSTALL THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLED TO THE M62 V8 ENGINE

NOTE:
This Technical Bulletin has been issued for information only, to inform Authorized Repairers of a change in the Labor Time allowance to remove and install the automatic transmission assembled to the M62 V8 engine in the VIN range specified.

Associated repairs that require the new workshop procedure will be changed accordingly.

The current workshop procedure calls for removal of the viscous fan and rear driveshaft. The new method leaves the viscous fan in place, and the driveshaft tied aside. Also, when the transmission is removed for access only, the transmission oil is not drained.

RESOLUTION:

FOLLOW NEW PROCEDURES TO REMOVE AND INSTALL THE TRANSMISSION

Should the automatic transmission assembled to an M62 V8 engine require removal and installation, refer to the Workshop Procedure detailed in this bulletin.

Service Instruction

Remove

1. Position vehicle on lift.

2. Disconnect battery ground cable.

3. Remove air intake plenum.





4. Disconnect connector from inhibitor switch harness.

5. Release clips securing left-hand oxygen sensor lead from transmission bell housing.





6. Remove two Torx bolts from top of bell housing.

7. Raise vehicle on lift.

8. Remove exhaust system.





9. Remove eight nuts securing centre heat shield and remove heat shield.





10. Remove five nuts release and remove right-hand heat shield.





11. Remove five nuts release and remove left-hand heat shield.





12. Remove eight hexagonal headed screws securing fuel tank heat shield and remove heat shield.

13. Reference mark rear driveshaft for reassembly.





14. Remove two nuts securing support bearing.





15. Remove six Torx bolts securing driveshaft to transfer box flange.

16. Release driveshaft and tie aside.

17. Remove front driveshaft.





18. Using LRT-44-032 support transmission on jack and secure with strap.





19. Remove nut and bolt securing mounting to cross member.

20. Remove six bolts securing cross member and remove cross member.





21. Remove snubbers from mounting.





22. Disconnect connector from high/low shift motor.





23. Disconnect connector from transmission housing.

24. Release clips securing H02 sensor leads to transfer box.

25. Remove nut securing selector lever to transmission selector shaft and release lever.





26. Remove two bolts securing selector cable support bracket to transmission and tie cable aside.

27. Remove bolt securing crankshaft sensor remove sensor and position aside.

28. Release right-hand oxygen sensor harness from transmission casing.

29. Remove undertray.





30. Remove grommet from bell housing to gain access to torque converter retaining bolts.

31. Rotate crankshaft for access and remove four bolts securing drive plate to torque converter.





32. Remove two bolts securing starter motor and tie aside.





33. Remove bolt securing fluid cooler saddle clamp to sump.

34. Position container beneath transmission to catch fluid loss.

35. CAUTION:
Always install plugs to open connections to prevent contamination.





Remove banjo bolt securing fluid cooler pipe to left-hand side of transmission and discard sealing washers.

36. CAUTION:
Always install plugs to open connections to prevent contamination.

Release fluid cooler pipe from right-hand side of transmission and discard 0-ring.

37. Remove the container.





38. Remove eight Torx bolts from bell housing.

39. With assistance carefully remove the transmission from the engine. Ensure the torque converter remains with the transmission.





40. Install converter retaining plate and secure with bolts.

Install

41. Clean mounting and mating faces.

42. Remove torque converter retaining plate.

43. With assistance carefully install transmission to engine. Ensure engagement of torque converter spigot and transmission housing onto dowels.

44. Install eight Torx bolts securing automatic transmission to engine tighten to 45 Nm.

45. Clean fluid cooler pipes unions and mating faces.

46. Position fluid cooler pipe to left-hand side of transmission.

47. NOTE:
Remove plugs from open connections.

Lubricate fluid cooler sealing washers with transmission fluid install banjo bolt to transmission and tighten to 37 Nm.

48. NOTE:
Remove plugs from open connections.

Install and lubricate new 0-ring to fluid cooler pipe install pipe to transmission and tighten to 37 Nm.

49. Position fluid cooler saddle clamp install bolt and tighten to 6 Nm.

50. Install starter motor and tighten bolts to 45 Nm.

51. Install bolts securing drive plate to torque converter and tighten to 45 Nm.

52. Install grommet to transmission bell housing.

53. Install undertray.

54. Install oxygen sensor leads to transmission casing.

55. Clean crankshaft sensor and mating face.

56. Position crankshaft sensor install bolt and tighten to 6 Nm.

57. Position selector cable support bracket to transmission install bolts and tighten to 10 Nm.

58. Install selector lever to inhibitor switch install nut and tighten to 10 Nm.

59. Install and secure H02 sensor leads to transfer box.

60. Connect connector to transmission connector.

61. Connect connector to high/low shift motor.

62. Install snubbers.

63. Install cross member to mounting install nut and bolt but do not tighten at this stage.

64. Align cross member install bolts and tighten to 90 Nm.

65. Remove support from transmission.

66. Tighten nut and bolt securing mounting to cross member to 74 Nm.

67. Install front driveshaft.

68. Install driveshaft to transfer box flange and align marks. Tighten Torx bolts securing driveshaft to transfer box flange to 85 Nm.

69. Tighten nuts securing support bearing to body to 21 Nm.

70. Install fuel tank heat shield to fuel tank and secure with screws.

71. Install right-hand heat shield and secure with nuts.

72. Install left-hand heat shield and secure with nuts.

73. Install centre heat shield and secure with nuts.

74. Lower vehicle.

75. Install exhaust system.

76. Install top bell housing Torx bolts and tighten to 25 Nm.

77. Install and secure LH oxygen sensor lead to transmission bell housing.

78 Connect inhibitor switch connector.

79. Install air intake plenum.

80. Connect the battery ground cable.

81. Top up the transmission with fluid as necessary.
