Cooling System - 'Check Coolant Level' Message Displayed
No.: LM303-007Issue: 1
Date: June 12, 2006
SECTION: 303-03
"Check Coolant Level" Message Displayed
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
New Range Rover (LM) VIN: 6A194480 to 6A216585
CONDITION SUMMARY:
"CHECK COOLANT LEVEL" MESSAGE DISPLAYED
Situation:
A customer may report that the "Check Coolant Level" message is displayed in the Message Center when the engine coolant expansion tank volume is within recommended levels. The coolant level float in the expansion tank can absorb coolant causing the float to sink. The warning message will display when the float sinks below the low level sensor trigger point.
Action:
Should a customer express a concern related to the above condition, within the specified VIN range, refer to the Repair Procedure detailed in this bulletin.
PARTS
NOTE:
The current expansion tank part PCF500070 may be used only if the sticker on the side of the part has a date of 31-10-05 (DD-MM-YY) or later. A newer part PCF500100 may be used when available.
WARRANTY:
NOTE:
Repair procedures are under constant review, and therefore times are subject to change; those quoted here must be taken as guidance only. Always refer to DDW to obtain the latest repair time.
DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
VERIFY ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL SENSOR OPERATION AND REPLACE EXPANSION TANK
WARNING:
Care must be taken to prevent injury from escaping hot steam or coolant. The coolant expansion tank filler cap must not be removed while the system is hot.
1. Ensure the engine coolant has cooled sufficiently.
2. Slowly remove the coolant expansion tank filler cap to release the cooling system pressure.
CAUTION:
Engine coolant will damage paint finished surfaces. Immediately remove any spilled coolant and clean area with water.
3. Verify the recommend amount of engine coolant is in the expansion tank.
4. Replace the filler cap.
5. If the coolant level is correct perform the following:
Remove the electrical connector from the expansion tank level sensor. (Arrowed in Figure 1)
^ If there is damage to the electrical connector or terminals, repair as necessary.
^ Connect the electrical connector to the expansion tank level sensor.
NOTE:
GTR lookup sequence is as follows:
GTR Home > NAS > Service Information/LM - New Range Rover/2006 > Workshop Manuals > Range Rover 2006 - Workshop Manual - New Systems Bookmark "Powertrain/Engine/303-03A or B Engine Cooling - 4.2L or 4.4L" Removal and Installation link "Coolant Expansion Tank (26.15.01)"
6. If the "Check Coolant Level" message still displays after the connector check, refer to GTR section 303-03A or B operation 26.15.01 and replace the engine coolant expansion tank.
7. Verify that the "Check Coolant Level" message no longer displays when the coolant level is within recommended level.
