Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems: Testing and Inspection

Anti-Lock Control - Traction Control

Overview
The anti-lock brake system plays a part in many other systems of the vehicle, having input into the operation of the hill descent control HDC, function, dynamic stability control DSC system, electronic traction control (ETC) system, emergency brake assist (EBA) system and others.

For information on the description and operation of the system,
Anti-Lock Control - Traction Control

Many of the functions forming part of the ABS system will communicate with the message center giving information to the driver about the operation of the system overall, which means that there are no real symptoms as such which are not covered by either a message or a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

Inspection and Verification
1. Verify the customer concern.
2. Visually inspect for obvious mechanical or electrical faults.

3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step
4. Use the approved diagnostic system or a scan tool to retrieve any DTCs before moving onto the DTC index.
^ Make sure that all DTCs are cleared following rectification.
