Date: 27 Sep 2005
SECTION: 501-08
Nameplate Paint Deterioration
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
Range Rover Sport (LS) VIN: 6A900500 to 6A910214
CONDITION SUMMARY:
PAINT DETERIORATION ON RANGE ROVER SPORT NAMEPLATES
Paint deterioration has been found on a number of Range Rover Sport vehicles within the above VIN range after limited exposure to exterior conditions.
Cause: The suspected root cause is a low film thickness of the paint system on the badge or variability in the manufacturing process.
Action: Should a customer complain of deteriorating paint on the vehicle nameplate and nameplate renewal is indicated, refer to the Repair Procedure detailed in this bulletin.
PARTS:
NOTE: The badge sets contain all the necessary parts and installation aids for a complete vehicle.
^ This issue does not affect the oval "Land Rover" badge.
^ The rectangular "Supercharged" badge is also not affected by this issue. However, due to its close proximity to the "SPORT" badge the "Supercharged" badge may be damaged during removal of the "SPORT" badge.
^ The "Supercharged" badge is included in the Supercharged Vehicle badge set and should be removed from the installation letter set and discarded if not required.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
TITLE
NOTE: If a nameplate badge shows signs of paint deterioration, all nameplate badges on the vehicle should be renewed to avoid repeat customer complaint.
NOTE: The "RANGE" and "ROVER" tailgate letter set can easily be distinguished from the "RANGE" and "ROVER" hood nameplates by the length of the installation cassette. The "RANGE" and "ROVER" tailgate letter sets are both longer than the equivalent hood letter sets.
NOTE: Ensure that the badge set aligns correctly in the installation jig before the film layer is returned in place.
1. Inspect the condition of the replacement rectangular "SUPERCHARGED" badge associated with the "SPORT" badge.
2. Verify the condition of the new badge to ensure the badge is not distorted and is straight.
3. If any distortion of the new "SUPERCHARGED" badge is determined, partially remove the top surface film layer and correct the distortion. (Figure 1)
4. Position the foam position blocks before any other action as follows:
^ Place appropriate empty installation template over nameplate badge lettering to be replaced. (Figure 2)
CAUTION: Care must be taken to position the foam location pads tight against the template to ensure accurate nameplate badge positioning.
^ Remove the backing tape from the foam location guides and position around the bottom corners of the foam template. (Figures 3)
5. Remove the empty installation template, leaving the foam location guides attached to the vehicle.
CAUTION: Use of a heat source is to soften the adhesive and make the badge letter removal easier. Care must be taken to avoid applying excessive heat, as this may damage the surrounding paintwork.
6. Using a suitable hot air gun in an approximate temperature range of 40°C to 50°C (104°F to 122°F), apply gentle heat to each letter of the nameplate badge:
^ Release each letter of the nameplate badge by gently easing the letter away from the vehicle body, either by hand or with the use of a suitable plastic implement.
^ Repeat until all letters have been removed, leaving only the foam location guides attached to the vehicle. (Figure 4)
CAUTION: Do not use soaps/detergents as the remaining residue could prevent the replacement letters adhering to the vehicle.
7. Clean the area where the letters have been removed, using clean water and soft lint free/abrasive free cloths. Ensure the area is thoroughly dry.
WARNING: Observe any handling recommendations for hazardous substances/cleaning agents used.
NOTE: The cleaned area may not be touched prior to applying the replacement letter parts.
8. Clean the application area with the Isopropyl Alcohol wipe provided, and ensure the area is thoroughly dry before applying any of the replacement parts.
CAUTION: The surface of the adhesive tape may not be touched before it is applied to the vehicle.
9. Remove the protective liner from the back of the letters in the new installation letter set.
10. Position the new installation letter set and align it with the foam location guides. (Figure 5)
CAUTION: Pressure must be applied to the new badge letters at right angles to the body to prevent the letters moving.
11. With the letter set in the correct position, apply firm thumb pressure to each letter of the badge to ensure the adhesive makes good contact with the vehicle surface. (Figure 6)
12. Remove and discard the installation template and the foam location guides. (Figure 7)
13. Repeat steps 4 to 12 for each applicable nameplate badge:
^ Range Rover - hood,
^ Range Rover - tailgate,
^ SPORT
^ HSE
