No.: RB039

Issue: 2

Date: July 17, 2006

Updated information is shown with asterisks.

SECTION: 204

RECALL: Left-Hand Front Brake Flexible Hose - Possible Foul Condition

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
Range Rover Sport (LS) VIN: 6A900129 to 6A949108*
* Specific vehicles within this Range

CONDITION SUMMARY:

POTENTIAL FOR BRAKE HOSE AND WIRING DAMAGE FROM WHEEL WEIGHT

Situation:

A concern has been identified with the left hand front brake hose on Range Rover Sport vehicles with 9JX19-inch wheels and without Brembo brakes. The front left brake hose/ABS wheel speed sensor lead/brake pad wear warning sensor lead may chafe against the clip-on wheel balance weights when the wheel is at full left steering lock and the suspension is moving towards full bump.

The customer may complain of the following:

^ A brake warning light and/or an ABS warning light and/or a worn brake pad message.

^ The warnings could possibly lead to a long brake pedal together with increased stopping distances.

Action:

Retailers are to inspect the Left Hand Front brake hose, ABS sensor wiring and pad wear sensor wiring for damage and where necessary replace affected components. The inner clip-on wheel balance weights on vehicles with 9JX19-inch wheels and without Brembo brakes must also be replaced with stick-on balance weights as part of this Recall action. See the workshop Repair Procedure in this bulletin.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

REPLACE INNER WHEEL WEIGHTS AND INSPECT FOR DAMAGE

1. Drive the vehicle onto a lift and raise to comfortable working heights.

2. Record the wheel balance weight values from both the inner and outer wheel edge on each of the four wheels.

3. Select the appropriate stick-on wheel weight from the table shown to replace the INNER clip-on weights only.

4. Clean the inner wheel surface at the locations where the clip-on weights are situated with a suitable cleaner (Brake-kleen(R) or similar).

5. Apply the stick-on weights to the inner rim surface at the corresponding location to the clip-on weight.

6. When application of stick-on weights is completed for all four wheels, remove all the INNER clip-on balance weights.

7. From underneath the vehicle inspect the condition of the front LH Brake Hose, ABS Sensor Lead and Pad Wear Warning Sensor Lead.

NOTE:
Only parts that are observed to be damaged or have signs of contact in the inspection are to be replaced.
