No: LTB00021
Issue: 1
Date: 01 Mar 2007

LTB00021 REPLACES LS211-001, PUBLISHED 27-JULY-2005. PROCEDURE AND LABOR TIME CHANGES ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH GREY BACKGROUND AND ASTERISKS.

SECTION: 211-02- STEERING SYSTEM

Steering Gear Noise

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

Range Rover Sport (LS)

VIN: 6A900129 to 6A904376

*Only vehicles with Wagner steering gear damping valve*

CONDITION SUMMARY:

SQUEAL FROM STEERING GEAR AREA

A customer may report a squealing noise from the steering gear if steering with the vehicle stationary or moving at slow speed (parking maneuvers for example). The noise could be evident steering in either direction.

Situation:
The noise is a result of hydraulic oil passing through the steering gear damping valve.

Action:
Should a customer express concern regarding the above symptoms, refer to the Repair Procedure detailed in this bulletin and replace the steering gear damping valves as described.

PARTS:

NOTE:
Both damping valves contained in the kit should be replaced on the vehicle with the symptoms.

QFW500030....Steering gear damping valve repair kit Qty 1 (contains two valves)

WARRANTY:

NOTE:
Repair procedures are under constant review, and therefore times are subject to change; those quoted here must be taken as guidance only. Always refer to DDW to obtain the latest repair time.

DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.

Normal warranty policy and procedures apply.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

INSTALL REPLACEMENT DAMPING VALVES

1. Raise vehicle on a suitable lift.

NOTE:
GTR lookup sequence is as follows:

GTR Home > NAS > Service Information/ LS Range

Rover Sport/2006 > Workshop Manuals > Range Rover

Sport Workshop Manual > Bookmark "501-02: Front

End Body Panels" > Link "Engine Undershield"

2. Refer to Range Rover Sport Workshop Manual Section 501-02 and remove the engine under shield. (Figure 1)

3. Remove the radiator access panel. (Figure 2)

NOTE:
Left-hand splash shield is shown in Figure 3. The right-hand is similar.

4. Remove the front RIGHT-HAND and LEFT-HAND splash shields by removing a4 clips for each shield. (Figure 3)

5. Remove the oil cooler pipe support bracket.

6. Release the LEFT-HAND dynamic response line support. (Figure 4)

7. Release the power steering line support bracket. (Figure 5)

8. Disconnect the pressure lines from the power steering gear. (Figure 6)

9. Replace each damping valve as follows:

^ With care, remove the retaining clip at the damping valve.

WARNING:
Fluid loss is unavoidable. Eye protection should be worn. If power steering fluid comes into contact with the paintwork, the affected area must be immediately washed with cold water.

^ Position a suitable oil container or absorbent cloth under the steering gear damping valve area.

CAUTION:
Ensure that the working area is clean to prevent power assisted steering (PAS) system contamination.

^ Apply minimal force to avoid the deformation of the transfer pipes and release the transfer pipe from the damping valve to obtain a minimum of a 5 mm (1/4 inch) gap between the pipe and valve.

^ Allow oil to drain from pipe.

^ Clean the area around the damping valve and remove the valve from steering gear.

^ Install new sealing washer with new damping valve.

^ Tighten the damping valve to 40 Nm +/- 3 Nm (29.5 lbf-ft +/- 2 lbf-ft).

NOTE:
0-ring must be installed onto pipe and not into valve.

^ Install a new rubber 0-ring seal to the transfer pipe and apply a smear of grease to aid assembly.

NOTE:
Care should be taken to avoid damage to the pipe or 0-ring. The pipe must be correctly located.

^ Install transfer pipe into the new damping valve. (Figure 7)

NOTE:
The retaining clip must be correctly located.

Verify new retaining clip is correctly located and install clip to the transfer pipe and damping valve.

10. Clean excess oil from area.

11. Install the pressure lines to the power steering gear and tighten the bolt to 22 Nm (16 lb-ft).

12. Install the power steering line support bracket.

13. Install the dynamic response line supports.

14. Install the oil cooler pipe support bracket.

15. Check and top up PAS fluid as necessary with correct Land Rover specification PAS fluid (LRN2261).

16. With the vehicle raised, have an assistant start the engine and turn steering wheel from full left steering lock to full right steering lock continuously for ten cycles.

17. Check for PAS fluid leaks under the vehicle.

18. Lower the vehicle.

19. Turn the steering wheel to full left steering lock and then back to the right half a turn.

NOTE:
Listen for the steering squeal noise during this step.

20. Move the steering wheel back and forth a quarter turn with varying steering speeds, starting slowly and increasing until steering efforts rise noticeably (approximately 10 cycles are required).

21. Turn the steering wheel to full right steering lock and then back to the left half a turn.

NOTE:
Listen for the steering squeal noise during this step.

22. Move the steering wheel back and forth a quarter turn with varying steering speeds, starting slowly and increasing until steering efforts rise noticeably (approx 10 cycles required).

23. Return the steering wheel to the straight ahead position.

24. Remove the PAS fluid reservoir cap and monitor the fluid temperature with a thermal measuring device.

25. Increase the PAS fluid temperature until 50°C (122°F) has been exceeded as follows:

^ Raising the engine speed to 1500 rpm.

^ Move the steering wheel a quarter turn left and hold.

26. When steering fluid is above 50°C, turn the steering wheel to full left steering lock and then back to the right half a turn.

NOTE:
An uncorrected steering squeal noise will be evident during this next step.

27. Move the steering wheel back and forth a quarter turn with varying steering speeds, starting slowly and increasing until steering efforts rise noticeably (approximately 10 cycles are required).

28. Turn the steering wheel to full right steering lock and then back to the left half a turn.

NOTE:
An uncorrected steering squeal noise will be evident during this next step.

29. Move the steering wheel back and forth a quarter turn with varying steering speeds, starting slowly and increasing until steering efforts rise noticeably (approx 10 cycles required).

30. If the squeal noise is detected, during the test with the PAS fluid temperature above 50°C (122°F), further diagnosis is required to determine the root cause of the noise.

31. If the squeal noise has not been detected, during the test with the PAS fluid temperature above 50°C (122°F), no further action is required.

32. Install the PAS reservoir cap and close the hood.

33. Refer to Range Rover Sport Workshop Manual Section 501-02 and install the engine belly pans.
