Front Suspension 'Knock' Noise While Driving Straight Ahead - Diagnostic Procedure
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE
CONDITION SUMMARY:
Situation:
Vehicles with Dynamic Response may exhibit a 'knock' noise from the front suspension while driving straight on rough / uneven road surfaces. The noise may be caused by a number of different issues.
NOTE:
For vehicles exhibiting a 'thud' noise, refer to Technical Bulletin LTB00198. For vehicles exhibiting a 'creak / squeak' noise, refer to Technical Bulletin LS204-006.
Action:
In the event of a customer concern of the above, refer to the Diagnostic Procedure outlined below to assist in identifying the source of the noise.
PARTS
TOOLS:
Refer to Workshop Manual (GTR) for any required special tools
WARRANTY:
NOTE:
Claims may only be submitted for performing the Diagnostic Procedure only; all other repairs to be claimed as a separate Warranty claim. Repair procedures are under constant review, and therefore times are subject to change; those quoted here must be taken as guidance only. Always refer to DDW to obtain the latest repair time.
NOTE:
Due to high component cost, all stabilizer bar claims may be subject to a Warranty audit. Please make sure the Diagnostic Procedure described above in this Technical Bulletin is carried out before renewing the stabilizer bar.
DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.
DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE
NOTE:
For VINS prior to 7A996253, ensure Technical Bulletin LTB00029 has been carried out.
NOTE:
Ensure Technical Bulletin LTB00123 has been performed and the noise is still evident prior to performing the Diagnostic Procedure outlined below.
NOTE:
The majority of knocks can be heard at approximately 25 mph (40 kph) on rough roads or over single-wheel inputs / shock.
NOTE:
Nuts should be replaced every time clamps are removed.
NOTE:
For current torque values, refer to Workshop Manual (GTR); lookup sequence is as follows: GTR Home > NAS > Model > Service Information > Model Year > Workshop Manual > 2: Chassis > 204: Suspension > 204-01: Front Suspension > Specifications
FRONT SUSPENSION DYNAMIC RESPONSE TORQUE CHECK
NOTE:
Global Technical Reference (GTR) lookup sequence is as follows: GTR Home > NAS > LS - Range Rover Sport > Service Information > Model Year > Workshop Manual > 5: Body and Paint > 501: Body and Paint > 501-02: Front End Body Panels
1. Refer to Workshop Manual (GTR) section 501-02: Front End Body Panels (76.10.50) and remove the engine undershield.
2. Verify torque of actuator arm flange bolts to actuator body. (Figure 1)
3. Check all Vehicle Dynamic system pipe routing:
^ Ensure no pipe-to-frame / body contact
^ Clear any stones / contamination from pipes and shields.
4. Using special tool 204-703 and 204-705, verify torque of front actuator clamp bolts. (Figure 2)
5. Refer to Workshop Manual (GTR) section 501-02: Front End Body Panels
(76.10.50) and install the engine undershield.
6. Roadtest vehicle to verify any repairs performed.
^ If noise is no longer evident, return vehicle to customer.
^ If noise is still present, continue to 'INSPECT REAR BODY MOUNT DAMPERS' below.
INSPECT REAR BODY MOUNT DAMPERS - REPLACE IF NECESSARY
1. Remove both rear body mount dampers.
2. Roadtest vehicle to determine if noise is still evident:
NOTE:
Vehicles with Dynamic Response must be fitted with rear body mount dampers prior to returning vehicle to customer.
^ If noise is no longer evident, replace the rear body mount dampers (to be carried out as a separate Warranty claim).
^ If noise is still present, install original rear body mount dampers; continue to 'INSPECT FRONT BODY MOUNT DAMPERS' below.
INSPECT FRONT BODY MOUNT DAMPERS
1. Remove both front body mount dampers.
2. Roadtest vehicle to determine if noise is still evident:
NOTE:
It is not necessary for vehicles with Dynamic Response to be fitted with front body mount dampers prior to returning vehicle to customer.
^ If noise is no longer evident, return vehicle to customer (do not install front body mount dampers).
^ If noise is still present, continue to 'REPLACE FRONT STABILIZER BAR' below.
INSPECT FRONT STABILIZER BAR - REPLACE IF NECESSARY
NOTE:
Global Technical Reference (GTR) lookup sequence is as follows: GTR Home > NAS > LS - Range Rover Sport > Service Information > Model Year > Workshop Manual > 2: Chassis > 204: Suspension > 204-05: Ride and Handling Optimization
1. Refer to Workshop Manual (GTR) section 204-05: Ride and Handling Optimization (60.60.50) and remove the front stabilizer bar.
2. Inspect for damage or deterioration to mounting bush:
^ If damage to mounting bush is evident, replace mounting bush (60.60.47 [to be carried out as a separate Warranty claim]).
^ If no damage is evident, replace front stabilizer bar, ensuring correct part is installed (to be carried out as a separate Warranty claim).
3. Road test vehicle to verify noise is eliminated / still evident.
^ If noise is eliminated, return vehicle to customer.
^ If noise is still evident or reduced and all previous checks described are verified, contact the Land Rover Technical HelpLine for additional support.
