SECTION: 211-04 - STEERING COLUMN

Steering Column Problems Requiring Replacement

AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:

Range Rover (LM)

VIN: 3A101029 onwards

CONDITION SUMMARY:

STEERING COLUMN PROBLEMS REQUIRING REPLACEMENT

Situation:
A vehicle may require steering column replacement due to certain problems or damage.

*NOTE:
Certain vehicles may be subject to Land Rover Service Action B028 "Steering Column Tilt Mechanism Upgrade". DDW and the latest issue of B028 should be reviewed for applicability prior to completing the Repair Procedure detailed in this bulletin.

NOTE:
"Noisy" tilt mechanism motors should NOT require replacement of the steering column assembly. A "noisy" tilt mechanism motor should be rectified by installing a tilt motor repair kit (QME500070) in accordance to TSB 571011031NA5 (Issue 2 or later).*

One of the following problems may require the steering column to be replaced:

^ An inoperative tilt mechanism

^ A steering lock mechanism problem

*^ Reach spindle thread damage

^ Rotational clicking noises attributed to internal column bearings*

Action:
If the vehicle is not subject to Service Action B028, and the issues reported with the steering column are not repairable using Technical Bulletins 571011031NAS (Issue 2 or later) - "Tilt Motor Mechanism Binding at Top Position", 57/04/05/NAS - "Steering Column Reach Motor Jamming" or 57/05/05/NAS (Issue 2 or later) - "Steering Column Reach Motor Noise", refer to the Repair Procedure detailed in this bulletin to replace the steering column with the appropriate part listed below according to vehicle VIN.

PARTS:

NOTE:
New steering columns below have the full upward tilt angle reduced by 0.5 degrees. New columns will be supplied less the steering angle sensor to reduce parts complexity.

*NOTE:
Steering column part number QMB000165 DOES NOT need to reworked with the spacer kit. QMB000165 may have been supplied under warranty instead of the ordered QMB500711 part until it became available. QMB000165 has been built to the new specification with a long tilt spindle nut and DOES NOT require the spacer kit to be installed.*

QMB500711........Steering column Qty 1 up to 5A198057 with memory seat QMB500691........Steering column Qty 1 6A198058 onwards with memory seat

TOOLS:

IDS DVDIO5 or later software installed

WARRANTY:

NOTE:
Repair procedures are under constant review, and therefore times are subject to change; those quoted here must be taken as guidance only. Always refer to DDW to obtain the latest repair time.

DDW requires the use of causal part numbers. Labor only claims must show the causal part number with a quantity of zero.

Normal warranty policy and procedures apply.
