Introduction
This bulletin describes the initialization procedure for the VGRS (Variable Gear Ratio Steering) system, which variably controls the steering angle in accordance with the vehicle speed.
The Short Pin is removed at the assembly plant to reduce parasitic current draw from the battery during transport and storage. As a result of the removal of the Short Pin, the VGRS system will be inoperative and the steering wheel may have become off-center in accordance with the steering wheel turning angle at the time when the Short Pin was removed.
After the Short Pin is installed to its original location, the VGRS system will be operative, but the steering wheel may become off-center by 5-10 degrees to the right or left. When the battery terminal has been disconnected, this condition may also appear.
Therefore, please initialize the VGRS system in accordance with the following procedure after installing the Short Pin to its original location or reconnecting the battery terminal.
NOTE:
Do not adjust the steering wheel centering (i.e., do not adjust tie rod ends) before initialization of the VGRS system, or the steering may be off-center on the opposite side after initialization.

2003 - 2006 model year LX 470 vehicles.

Initialization Procedure
1. Install the Short Pin to its original location in junction block No. 1 in the engine compartment with the ignition switch off.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position and check that the VGRS and VSC/TRAC warning lights illuminate for a few seconds.
NOTE:
If the warning lights remain on or blink, repair the applicable system according to the Repair Manual.
3. Drive the vehicle on a straight road at 22 mph (35 km/h) or more for 5 seconds or longer. At this point, the steering wheel will still remain off-center by 5-10 degrees.
HINT:
In this step, the neutral position of the steering wheel is recorded in the VGRS ECU memory.
4. Perform normal cornering 2-3 times.
The steering wheel position is automatically corrected in this step.
NOTE:
If the steering wheel remains off-center after the above procedure, repair the applicable system according to the 2003 - 2006 LX 470 Repair Manual.
