Introduction

Some customers may complain of a grinding/groaning noise from the moon roof when tilting or opening. The moon roof drive cables have been modified to improve this condition.

^ 2004 model year RX 330 (TMMC) vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown below.

Applicable Warranty*:
This repair is covered under the Lexus Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

Repair Procedure

Replace Moon Roof Drive Cables.

NOTE:

^ Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS): 2004 model year RX 330 Repair Manual: Exterior/Interior Trim: Roof Headlining Assembly: Replacement (RX330).

^ To install the moon roof assembly, reverse the order of removal. Please note special points concerning the installation.





1. Remove roof headlining assembly.

2. Remove sliding roof side garnish LH and RH.

Using a screwdriver, disengage the clip and remove the side garnish.

HINT:

Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

3. Remove sliding roof glass sub-assembly. Using a torx driver (T25), remove the 4 screws and roof glass.





4. Remove sliding roof housing sub-assembly.

A. Disconnect the 4 hoses and drive gear connector.

B. Remove the 8 bolts and 4 brackets.

C. Remove the 8 nuts and housing.

5. Remove sliding roof drive gear sub-assembly.

A. Remove the drive gear bracket.

B. Remove the 2 bolts and drive gear.

6. Remove sunshade trim sub-assembly.





7. Remove roof drip channel rear. Remove the roof drip channel as shown in the illustration.





8. Remove sliding roof drive cable LH and RH.

Using the taped screwdriver, remove the drive cable by sliding it backward as shown in Figure 4.





9. Install new sliding roof drive cable LH and RH.

Using the taped screwdriver, install the drive cable by sliding it forward as shown in Figure 5.





10. Install roof drip channel rear. Install the roof drip channel rear as shown in Figure 6.

11. Install sunshade trim sub-assembly.

12. Install sliding roof drive gear sub-assembly.

A. Install the drive gear and 2 bolts.

B. Install the drive gear bracket.





13. Install sliding roof housing sub-assembly.

A. Install the housing with the 8 nuts.

Torque: 5.5 N.m

(56 kgf.cm, 49 in.lbf)

B. Install the 4 brackets with the 8 bolts.

Torque: 8.0 N.m

(82 kgf.cm, 72 in.lbf)

C. Connect the 4 hoses and drive gear connector.





14. Adjust fully closed position. Using the taped screwdriver, slide the drive cable of the sliding roof to match the alignment marks as shown in Figure 8.





15. Install sliding roof glass sub-assembly.

16. Adjust sliding roof glass sub-assembly and check for water leaks.





Using torx wrench (T25), loosen a screw to adjust the sliding roof panel position. When the adjustment has been done, tighten the screw.

Torque: 5.5 N.m (56 kgf.cm, 49 in.lbf)

NOTE:
The clearance between the roof glass and roof panel should be even around the perimeter of the glass.





17. Install roof headlining assembly.

18. Initialize moon roof. If battery was disconnected, refer to TSIB No. PG002-03, Pre -Delivery Service (PDS) In formation for RX 330, " for additional initialization procedures.

A. Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.

B. Push and hold the moon roof switch to the TILT UP, side or the "SLIDE-CLOSE" side until the following cycle of the moon roof operation is completed:

a. Closing

b. Fully tilt up

c. Fully tilt down

d. Fully slide open

e. Fully slide close

C. After the cycle of operation above is completed, the initialization is completed.

D. Check for proper operation of the "one-touch slide open and close" and "one-touch tilt up and down" functions by pushing the switch briefly to the "SLIDE OPEN" and TILT UP" positions.

NOTE:
Jam protection function is enabled through the above initialization procedure.
