Some customers with 2004 model year RX 330 vehicles may experience an intermittent power back door operating condition consisting of the following:
- Power back door intermittently inoperative.
- Opening and closing the door manually will temporarily restore proper operation.
- No DTC codes are present in the Body ECU or Back Door ECU.
An updated Back Door ECU has been created to address this condition.
APPLICABLE VEHICLES:
- 2004 model year RX330 vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VIN shown below.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) present.
- If no codes are present, proceed with the procedure below.
- If codes are present, diagnose per 2004 model year RX 330 Repair Manual instructions on ETAS.

Subsection: Power Back Door Control
2. Remove Deck Board Sub-assembly.
a) Disengage the 5 clips and turn up the front side of the deck board.
b) Remove the 2 bolts and deck board.
3. Remove Rear Seat Assembly LH.
a) Remove the 3 clips.
b) Remove the bolt holding the fold seat stopper band on the vehicle side.
c) Remove the headrest.
d) Remove the 5 bolts and seat.
4. Remove Tonneau Cover Assembly.
5. Remove Deck Floor Box Front.
a) Using a clip remover, remove the 2 clips and deck floor box.
6. Remove Deck Floor Box Rear.
a) Using a clip remover, remove the 2 clips and deck floor box.
7. Remove Deck Board Sub-assembly No. 2.
a) Remove the 4 nuts and deck board.
8. Remove Deck Board Sub-assembly No. 3.
a) Remove the 2 nuts and deck board.
9. Remove Deck Side Trim Box RH.
a) Remove the clip.
b) Using a clip remover, remove the 2 clips and deck side trim box.
10. Remove Deck Side Trim Box LH.
a) Remove the clip.
b) Using a clip remover, remove the 2 clips and deck side trim box.
11. Remove Rear Floor Finish Plate.
a) Using a clip remover, remove the 2 clips and finish plate.
12. Remove Rear Floor Finish Side Plate LH.
a) Using a clip remover, remove the clip.
b) Using a screwdriver, disengage the 2 clips and remove the floor finish side plate.
HINT:
Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
13. Remove Deck Side Trim Cover RH.
a) Using a molding remover, disengage the 5 claws and remove the trim cover by pulling it to the inside of the vehicle.
14. Remove Rear Seat Side Cover RH.
a) Remove the bolt and belt on the floor anchor side.
b) Using a clip remover, remove the 2 clips.
c) Using a screwdriver, disengage the 4 clips and remove the side cover.
15. Remove Rope Hook.
a) Remove the 4 bolts and 4 hooks.
16. Remove Deck Trim Side Panel
a) Using a clip remover, remove the 4 clips.
b) Using a screwdriver, disengage the 2 clips and remove the side panel.
17. Remove Room Lamp Assembly No. 2.
a) Using a screwdriver, disengage the clip and remove the room lamp.
b) Disconnect the room lamp connector.
18. Remove Roof Side Garnish Assembly Inner LH.
a) Using a screwdriver, disengage the claws and remove the bezel.
b) Remove the 3 bolts.
c) Using a clip remover, remove the 3 clips.
d) Using a screwdriver, disengage the 8 clips and remove the roof side garnish.
19. Remove and replace Back Door ECU.
20. Reassemble in reverse order of disassembly.
